PRESS RELEASE 23RD SEPTEMBER 2026 MINISTRY OF REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT FETES 24 RETIREES … urges retirees to remain active after retirement The Ministry of Regional Development has feted 24 retirees, appealing to them to remain active in whatever way they can after retirement, while noting the challenges many people face during the transition from active service to retirement. The Permanent Secretary, Dr Mary Ada Ogbe, stated this in her remarks at the retirement celebration held today. She said the Federal Government and the Ministry appreciate the retirees’ contributions to Nigeria’s development, particularly the time, dedication, and achievements they devoted to the service. She prayed that God would reward them abundantly. She drew the retirees’ attention to the government’s welfare packages and severance benefits available to them, noting that the benefits are expected to provide some financial stability before they begin receiving their pensions. We are celebrating 24 retirees this morning. We celebrate you, and we are grateful for your commitment, dedication, and service to the nation,” Dr Mary said. She urged the retirees to continue sharing their voices, knowledge, and experiences in whatever ways they can, so that the service can continue to benefit from their wealth of experience.“To those who worked directly with me, I sincerely thank you for your patience, understanding, and support throughout our time together,” she added. In her welcome address, the Director of Human Resources Management, Mrs Tabitha Dagyol, told the retirees that they were the reason for the gathering. “You have served this nation, and in particular, the Ministry of Regional Development, with unquantifiable loyalty, integrity, and commitment. For years, some for over three decades, you bore the burden of national development. You implemented policies, nurtured younger officers, and kept the system running even when it was difficult. You have written your names in the history of this Ministry.” She said that between May 2025 and September 2026, the Ministry had bid farewell to the “gallant officers,” cutting across grade levels and cadres, from the Directorate cadre to Administrative, Technical, and Support staff. “Each one of you carried a brick in building this Ministry from its formative stage as the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to its present expanded mandate as the Ministry of Regional Development. Your footprints are indelible,” she said. Mrs Tabitha added that the Ministry recognises that retirement is not the end of life but the beginning of a new and more rewarding chapter. According to her, it is a transition from active public service to a well-deserved period of rest, family, community service, and personal pursuits that time may not have permitted while in service. She also appealed to staff still in service to learn from the retirees' dedication and commitment. “Let today be a lesson for us. Let us learn from the dedication of our retirees. Let us serve with the consciousness that one day, we will also be celebrated in this manner. Let us be punctual, let us be diligent, and let us leave this Ministry better than we met it.” Speaking on behalf of the retirees, the former Director of Finance and Accounts, Akpan Etop Andy, thanked the Ministry and its management for organising the celebration. He urged serving staff to remain kind and supportive towards their colleagues, so that they would be remembered positively and spoken of highly by others when they retire. MINISTRY TO REVIEW REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMISSIONS' ACTIVITIES The Ministry of Regional Development will conduct a peer review of the regional development commissions and submit its findings to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, disclosed this on Monday at the First North Central Stakeholders’ Development Summit in Abuja. He said the review would determine whether the commissions had fulfilled the purposes for which they were established. “In a very short time, as a ministry, we will sit down and peer review all the development commissions and submit our report to the President,” Momoh said. He stressed that the commissions were government establishments and must operate in accordance with government policies, rules, and regulations, rather than functioning as independent entities. “Let it be made clear that the regional development commissions are not private enterprises. They are government establishments, governed by government rules, governed by all extant regulations,” he said. Momoh said the outcome of the exercise would form the basis for determining whether individual commissions had fulfilled their mandates at the time of their establishment. “Our report will form the basis to know whether that commission has fulfilled the reason for which they were inaugurated and established,” he said. The Minister said some of the new commissions were beginning to demonstrate capacity and vision, while others needed to improve. “Two of them are starting to show the path. One is in the middle. I think the other two are still sleeping. I think I’m sure they need to wake up,” he said. He cited the Niger Delta Development Commission and the North East Development Commission as examples of commissions that had demonstrated capacity through major development projects. The Minister of State for Regional Development, Alhaji Uba Maigari Ahmadu, said the Federal Government was also at an advanced stage of harmonising the National Regional Development Policy 2026–2030. Ahmadu said the policy was being developed in collaboration with the National Economic Council, the regional development commissions, development partners, and the National Regional Development Policy drafting team. He said the policy would provide “a single coherent national architecture” within which the commissions could plan, prioritise, and mobilise resources. According to him, the policy would soon be presented to the Federal Executive Council for consideration. Ahmadu said the North Central required a dedicated and coordinated response to its development challenges, stressing that government alone could not provide the resources needed to transform the region. He called for increased participation by the private sector and development partners through blended finance, public-private partnerships, agribusiness investment, and technical collaboration. The Minister said the success of regional development should ultimately be measured by its impact on towns, farming communities, and local governments, rather than activities carried out in Abuja. He added that the Ministry would work with the North Central Development Commission to track the implementation of the summit’s resolutions and ensure that they feed into the National Regional Development Policy and its accompanying plan. #MRD #RegionalDevelopment #DevelopmentCommission

MINISTRY OF REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT PRESS RELEASE 14TH SEPTEMBER 2026 MINISTER TASKS NORTH CENTRAL DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION ON MEASURABLE RESULTS AND ACCOUNTABILITY The Honourable Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh has tasked the North Central Development Commission (NCDC) with delivering measurable results, accountability, inclusiveness, and coordinated, sustainable development in the North Central region. The Minister stated this at the opening ceremony of the First North Central Stakeholders’ Development Summit, organised by the NCDC today, Monday, 14 September 2026, at the Abuja Continental Hotel, Abuja. Addressing the gathering, the Honourable Minister emphasised the importance of strategic planning, effective coordination and stakeholder engagement in addressing development gaps and unlocking the potential of Nigeria’s regions. He said the Ministry of Regional Development stands ready to work with the North Central Development Commission, the Governments of the North Central States, the Federal Capital Territory, development partners, the private sector and communities to translate this ambitious vision into measurable and enduring development. “The theme of this programme, ‘The Great Leap Forward: A 20-Year Economic, Infrastructural and Social Development Plan for the North Central Region,’ is both ambitious and timely. It challenges us to look beyond today’s immediate pressures and collectively define the North Central we want to see over the next two decades. More importantly, the theme recognises a fundamental principle of development: transformational development requires long-term planning,” he stated. Speaking further, the Minister emphasised that a 20-year development plan will, without a doubt, enable the North Central region to establish a common vision that transcends individual states, projects and administrations. Also speaking, the Honourable Minister of State, Ministry of Regional Development, H.E. Uba Maigari Ahmadu, in his keynote address, commended the efforts of the North Central Development Commission in coordinated planning, strategic investments and sustainable interventions aimed at promoting inclusive growth and improving the quality of life of citizens across the North Central region. While stressing the dire need for concerted efforts to achieve sustainable transformation and socio-economic development in the North Central region, Hon. Maigari assured the Commission of the Ministry’s continued support in promoting inclusive and sustainable development across the region. Welcoming the participants, the Managing Director of the North Central Development Commission (NCDC), Dr Cyril Yiltsen Tsenyil, appreciated Mr President for the creation of the Commissions and stressed that the summit was not just another event but a trailblazer in realising its mandate. “Let us therefore move from potential to productivity; from raw materials to value addition; from isolated projects to regional corridors; from ideas to bankable projects; from government spending to investment mobilisation; and from competition to collaboration — from regional potential to regional prosperity. “Let us build a North Central where investment creates opportunities, opportunity creates jobs and jobs create dignity, and dignity creates peace; a region whose success strengthens Nigeria,” he stated. The summit, which has as its theme, “The Great Leap Forward: A 20-Year Economic, Infrastructural and Social Development Plan for the North Central Region,” brought together key stakeholders from across the region to deliberate on a comprehensive development framework capable of driving long-term transformation and improving the quality of life of the people.
