ALT BCD flyer. Bietti’s Crystalline Dystrophy (BCD) is an often misdiagnosed blinding disease. How to spot BCD? BCD patients have small yellow-white crystals in the retina. Crystals may not be obvious in all BCD patients. Near-infrared imaging can enhance the detection of crystals in BCD. BCD is often misdiagnosed as other retinal degenerative diseases such as Stargartdt’s disease, Choroideremia or as Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) in general. BCD is an autosomal recessive RP. Some BCD patients do not have a family history. Use CYP4V2 gene test to diagnose or confirm BCD. BCD symptoms include night blindness, photophobia, distorted vision, impaired visual acuity and visual field and eventually legal blindness. Potential treatments are being developed for BCD. ALT I have a dear friend who is losing her vision rapidly due to rare genetic disorder called Bietti’s Crystalline Dystrophy (BCD). When she first talked about this to me, strikingly, she said “I’m lucky.” I couldn’t believe her at first, but then I saw first-hand how she handles life’s challenges. One day, I picked her up from the BART station after her first white cane training class. I was expecting to see signs of sadness on her face. However, all she talked about was how excited she was to use her caner to navigate public transportation. She explained to me that she could have lost her vision in her 20s. Since she didn’t, she had an extra decade to explore the world and see new sights. Now, I remember how she always viewed the world, full of curiosity and excitement. When she said “I’m lucky”, she meant it. Quote from Cherry from Rothys
