🚨 Our new report, out today, shows that we're heading towards a catastrophic system meltdown because of the Illegal Migration Act and the Rwanda Plan. Over 100,000 people seeking asylum will be stranded in “permanent limbo” by the end of 2024. 🧵

Two years on from the terrible tragedy that claimed the lives of at least 27 people crossing the English Channel, we remember and honour them, alongside many more precious lives lost on dangerous journeys to the UK. Two other lives were lost in the same way just two days ago. Humans in search of safety deserve just that. To stop witnessing these tragedies, we must create safe routes for all refugees wishing to come to the UK: we need to improve resettlement and refugee family reunion schemes and make it easier for people to travel to the UK to claim asylum.

The Rwanda scheme has just been ruled unlawful by the UK Supreme court! This is a victory for the rights of men, women and children who simply want to be safe. The plan goes against who we are as a country that stands up for those less fortunate than us and for the values of compassion, fairness and humanity. The Government should be focusing on creating a functioning, fair and humane asylum system and expanding safe routes.

With over 100 other charities, we've written an urgent letter asking the government to end the unlawful practice of placing separated children in Home Office hotels. The government must spare no resource to find all children who are missing. @ECPATUK refugeecouncil.org.uk/latest…

We are devastated to hear news of the incident in the Channel today, and heartbroken at the reports of fatalities. Our thoughts are with all those affected and we pay tribute to the rescue teams working on such a dreadful incident.
