This story launched the series back in March, a good overview of our findings and the kinds of cases we found. In all, we ID'd 1,000+ deaths following the use of so-called "less lethal" force, such as restraints, body blows and non-firearm weapons. apnews.com/article/associate…
Billionaires are building rockets to Mars, chips to implant in human brains and artificial intelligence to replace just about everything. And yet, government agencies still only accept public-information requests via fax machine.
Great to read @HowardCenterUMD's Sean Mussenden in this piece discussing the AI and machine learning tools used in our "Lethal Restraint" collab. UMD's HC, led by @kbest, was such a wonderful teammate. Couldn't have done that project without them. niemanlab.org/2025/05/how-th…
Same goes for the sister program @HowardCenterASU, which was also a key part of this journalistic effort. If I were advising a student considering a master's in journalism, I'd highly recommend either program. Tuition money well spent.
Nice of my former employer, @AP, to work in a reference to Lethal Restraint in the spot news story about the Pulitzer winners. We were a finalist, and yesterday was the winners' day to shine. They deserved the ink. So appreciate making it into the story. apnews.com/article/pulitzer-…

Wow. Grateful to have our Lethal Restraint series recognized as a @PulitzerPrizes finalist in investigative reporting. Honored to share the medal podium with @Reuters & @WSJ. Appreciate the board and jury selecting us because it keeps elevating the issue. Congrats to my team.
And thank you to @bcarovillano @nixonron for green-lighting this project. You wanted us to swing for the fences. We did our best. And thank you to @JPritchardAP for guiding us through the long days and long hours.
And thank you to our collaborators at @frontlinepbs and the @HowardCenterASU, @HowardCenterUMD, Maud Beelman, @LaurenMucciolo and @kbest.
Happy to share the @frontlinepbs documentary for our police use-of-force investigation, Lethal Restraint, has been nominated for two Emmy Awards. hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-…

Excited to report that my team’s police use-of-force investigation, Lethal Restraint, won Best in Show for digital journalism in the National Headliners Awards. Really appreciated the judges comments. headlinerawards.org/2025-ove…
Nice to see our Lethal Restraint police investigation referenced in this Congressional Research Service report on "less-lethal weapons." Gratifying to know our work is having impact by helping policymakers and researchers. congress.gov/crs-product/R48…
This is a really helpful way to present the fire hose of news coming out of D.C. these days. Organized by actions and themes with links to go read further. Good job, @BBC. apple.news/AtiS1fDs-SAm93pY1…

Not like Texas public schools are well funded as it is. Sure seems like matters could get worse. We need smart graduates, top teachers to maintain our economic edge.
In his push for private school vouchers, Gov. Greg Abbott has repeatedly emphasized he has no intention of harming Texas public schools.
But this week, Abbott acknowledged that his priority policy would in fact result in public schools losing money. bit.ly/3CQNZcD
Honored that our Lethal Restraint police investigation is a finalist for the Royal Television Society’s inaugural digital journalism award. This contest is the British version of an Emmy, and I’m grateful that our team and partners were recognized for our digital efforts.
