Last week on Friday l had a chance to join a data protection forum and the sessions reminded me of how my digital data is my life. I thought of how every day we hand over pieces of ourselves without a second thought, our location to an app, our ID to a loan form even our faces to unlock our phones. Most of us even think data protection is a tech problem. Bright Gameli Mawudor‘a session on cybersecurity reminded me that it is a MY PROBLEM because once my data is out there, I don’t decide what happens to it next. A few things worth remembering: → You can’t consent to what you don’t understand. Some of us are quick to tick “I agree” without reading and call it consent, which is not. → Leaked data has been used to harass, blackmail and silence people. → Your digital footprint outlives the moment. That app you deleted last year may still have your data. In Kenya, the Data Protection Act (2019) already gives you the right to know, access, correct, and object to how your data is used. Most people have never exercised a single one of those rights. A little exercise to do to check your digital footprint is to go to whatsmyname.io and search your name. You will be amazed of the results.
