Our Visitor Center Gallery has some remarkable new additions ✨ As part of the Washington Crossing 2026 Initiatives to enhance the visitor experience for the 250th anniversary, artifacts on loan from @MercerAndFonthill and @FortTiconderoga are now on display in the Glorious Enterprise exhibit. The loans will remain at the Park through January 17, 2027 🗓️ Among the highlights are an epaulet attributed to Alexander Hamilton, on loan from Fort Ticonderoga, and a chair from the home of Dr. John Chapman, on loan from the Mercer Museum. Hamilton stayed at Chapman’s home while ill during the army’s Bucks County encampment 🏕️ The Mercer Museum has also shared a floorboard from the Keith House, which served as Washington’s headquarters before the crossing, a pistol belonging to Bucks County tavern owner and Continental Army soldier Augustine Willett, and two letters. One letter, written shortly after the Battle of Princeton, relays an unconfirmed rumor that Washington had been wounded 📜 Visitors can also see a recently acquired pewter charger that, according to family tradition, Benjamin Moore used to bring food to Washington as the army marched toward Trenton. We are grateful to the Mercer Museum and Fort Ticonderoga for sharing these artifacts as we prepare to commemorate the Crossing 🛶 Plan your visit to see them in person: tinyurl.com/4k9uxc9t 🔗 #2026Initiatives #ExhibitGallery #GalleryEnhancements #WashingtonCrossingHistoricPark

I am in the middle of editing a new episode of Retracing History. That means I got books pulled off shelves and scattered all over the place as I dot my historic Xs and Os. Most do not take up too much desktop, but this one needs a coffee table to call home. “Outposts of the War for Empire” by Charles M Stotz delves into the forts constructed in Pennsylvania during the French & Indian War, with an emphasis on their architecture. Stotz was involved with the preservation and reconstruction of several sites of historic importance in Western Pennsylvania, including Fort Ligonier and Hannastown, both being sites we have visited in past episodes. #HistoryMatters #books #pennsylvania

Catch a peak of this cannon from Garnison de Presque Isle, used to educate about the role of artillery in the defense of New France 🇫🇷🇨🇦🇺🇸 during the French & Indian War (Seven Years War). To learn for, click the link in the comments below to the the newest episode of Retracing History. ⬇️⬇️⬇️ You may also meet the living historians who operate this piece in person at an event coming soon to your own backyard. We were able to see them in action at the Stahlstown Flax Scutching Festival.

On This Day 167 Years Ago, a detachment of US Marines stormed the fire engine house for the US Armory & Arsenal in Harpers Ferry, bringing an end to John Brown's Raid. Much has been debated about the morality and ramifications of Brown's actions. Few make mention of how the raid had exposed a critical weakness of the defense of the United States. And just a few years later, Stonewall Jackson would also demonstrate how the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac could be made a perfect steel trap. Check out this early episode of Retracing History which explores sites key to Brown's Raid as well as the 1862 Battle of Harpers Ferry, as they appear today in the 21st Century: youtu.be/3vKMZXizZp0

Everyone talks about The Cannonade that preceded Pickett's Charge on the Third Day of Battle at Gettysburg. Few discuss the Artillery Nightmare that gripped the Peach Orchard on the Second Day. The gun crews of James Thompson, Consolidated Batteries C & F Pennsylvania Artillery, were caught in the middle of it! Watch this episode of Retracing History which follows in the footsteps of these artillery batteries where they fought for their survival in the middle of the American Civil War's bloodiest battle: youtu.be/2nC-H9KAdgY

If you don’t know, there is a massive festival hosted in Ligonier, PA every year commemorating the French & Indian War Battle of Fort Ligonier. Because of my videos frequent visits to this historic town, I have had several viewers ask if I would be in town for this year’s festivities. The answer is yes. I will be assisting my friends at the Redcoat Cigar Co on Saturday and Sunday during the festival. Stop by and say hi If you are in town!
