Play Fortnite together, then do 20 push-ups. Read at night, then watch Aliens with them a few years before its really appropriate. Blow on their scraped knee, then tell 'em it's going to be fine, and get back on the bike. Play Uno, then have them empty the dishwasher.
Once you understand that the world is full of highly neurotic people who need a doom's day scenario to validate their emotions, it all makes much more sense: Malthusian starvation, pandemic, climate, and now AI. I wish we still had "the devil" to play this part.

I've long wondered why Zoomers are so obsessed with "therapy-speak," self-diagnosing obscure mental health disorders, "trauma", and the like.
And today it dawned on me: These are the children of unfathomable levels of divorce, fatherlessness, and familiar dysfunction. Most of them have been catastrophically impacted by that stuff, and their parents failed to inculcate in them a sense of discipline, manners, self-control, toughness, or really any valuable life skills whatsoever.
And so, after the damage waged upon them by broken families, all of them are sensitive, idiosyncratic, don't "fit in," and the only way they can make sense of that is by claiming some kind of mental illness.
Because it's easier to say "I'm autistic and my trauma keeps me from forming normal social relationships" than to say "my mom was a psychotic whore and my dad was a self-absorbed chronic fornicator and neither of them were remotely capable of raising me correctly."
To say the former is to say "I'm OK just as I am, the world needs to bend over backwards for me" -- to say the latter is to admit that despite being dealt a bummer set of cards, the onus is on you to learn all the stuff your nutcase parents failed or refused to teach you.

The reason you end up with education experts saying absurd things like "it's developmentally inappropriate for a child to learn letters at age 3"
is because *some* kids are genuinely not developmentally ready to learn letters at age 3
But there is an implicit and unquestionable assumption in education that all kids are the same
and so if it's developmentally inappropriate for some kids to learn letters at 3, then we must declare that it's developmentally inappropriate for all kids to learn letters at 3.
God forbid we should say something like:
"Some kids might be ready to read at age 3 and enjoying chapter books before they arrive at kindergarten. Other kids might not be ready to learn to read until age 6.
So let's make sure we have a classroom ready to support and challenge those kindergarteners who can already read Harry Potter and make sure they keep progressing
And lets make sure we have a classroom ready to support and challenge those kindergarteners who are just barely ready to begin learning their letters."

Once you get above a certain threshold of regulation, it kind of does become true that you’re no longer just a person interacting with other people. You’re part of a system. And that system includes all kinds of actors advocating for themselves in ways that impact you and about which you don’t get any say.
For example, when you go to your doctors office it’s not just you and your doctor having an interaction. Your doctor is a member of an organization that lobbies Congress to limit the number of people who can become doctors. That has a really big effect on the world! When you interact with your doctor, you’re interacting with a system that has rules that were written by your doctor’s advocates to make your doctor’s practice more profitable at your expense.
This completely deranges all ordinary moral logic. You want to be a good person who does the right thing when you get a bill from your doctor, but that bill is the final step in a system that’s much bigger than your interaction with your doctor.

Brightline is filing for bankruptcy. While certainly there are policy issues around permitting time and construction costs and EPA rules and the like, fundamentally, Brightline made sense as a rail project. But it's going bankrupt because demand for passenger rail just isn't there.
The reason America doesn't have European railways is because Americans do not actually want them very much.

I’m going to admit here to something that I find a little shameful, something I never thought I’d do, something I’m kind of embarrassed to admit.
I recently let a $3000 medical bill go to collections because there are zero consequences for this in my state and I know that it will let me negotiate a lower price.
Do you know how demoralized you have to make me to get me to behave this way? Do you know how badly you have to derange the incentives to turn me into this?

I had not realised before that the Bronze Age Collapse was literally *caused* by iron.
Bronze age powers like the Egyptians, Hittites and Babylonians used bronze weapons, made by combining copper and tin. Tin was so scarce that only the richest and most powerful groups could access it and the bronze weapons it allowed. (Tin was so rare that it was being transported from Cornwall to the Middle East more than 1000 years BC.) The scarcity of tin gave these empires a near-monopoly on violence.
Iron weapons are not actually any better than bronze ones – they're not stronger or easier to work with, as I'd assumed. They're just much, much easier to mass produce once you have bloomeries, which are the first furnaces that were hot enough to melt iron in a way that made them useable for weapons.
Bloomeries meant that iron ore, which was widespread, could be used to make weapons anywhere. That led to warlords, bandits and city-states rising in a massive decentralization of military power, which the Bronze Age empires were unable to resist.
After the invention of the bloomery, skeletons show a measurable increase in weapon-inflicted injuries. 'Destruction layers' with bones and signs of burning have been found from this time at archaeological sites including Troy. Ancient writers – including Herodotus, Ovid, and the writers of the Old Testament – believed the invention of iron had unleashed a new age of violence.

You see an extreme rise from about 2018 to peaking now in 2026
Then why do the official numbers show a continuous drop in crime?
Because police doesn't let you file a report anymore for basic crime and people know police won't solve crime so they don't even try to file a police report
