Too many Red Cross and Red Crescent jackets have become shrouds.
In Brussels today, I joined leaders from across the humanitarian sector, including colleagues from many National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and the @ICRC, for a high-level panel discussion at the International Conference on the Protection of Humanitarian Aid Workers, hosted by the European Commission @EU_ECHO and the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU @Ireland2026eu.
I shared a simple message: humanitarian workers need more than our gratitude. They need protection.
Respect the law. Invest in trust. Ensure accountability.
So far this year, 22 Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and staff have been killed while helping others. Most were local responders serving their own communities and carrying the greatest risks.
Let’s turn commitments into action. We owe that to all those who have lost their lives while helping others.

I am about to head to Brussels for the International Conference on the Protection of Humanitarian Aid Workers with a painful reminder of why this gathering matters.
On 13 October, three members of the Ukrainian Red Cross @RedCrossUkraine were injured in an attack in Sloviansk, Donetsk region. They suffered wounds and burns, and their office was heavily damaged. My thoughts are with them, their families and their colleagues, and I wish them a full and swift recovery.
They were serving their communities. They should never have been harmed.
In Brussels, our message will be clear: humanitarian personnel and facilities must be respected and protected, everywhere and at all times. The conference must translate concern into concrete commitments, stronger protection and meaningful accountability.
At the @EU_EESC European Public Diplomacy Days, our Director Mette Petersen highlighted a key message: Health equity depends not only on resilient health systems, but also on resilient communities. Achieving it requires political commitment, sustained investment, and engagement.
Great to visit the @CroixRouge Civilian Preparedness Village during its 82nd General Assembly. An important initiative to raise awareness of local risks and share practical steps people can take to be better prepared.
We were honoured to join the @CroixRouge at the rekindling of the flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Paris. A humbling moment celebrating its humanitarian work and paying tribute to Red Cross and Red Crescent staff and volunteers who lost their lives in service.

Different landscapes. Different crises. The same human heart.
Across the world, our staff and volunteers and the people they serve are neighbors, friends, colleagues, family members.
This is what unites us. This is who we are, united in humanity. #8May
More people across Europe are turning to National Red Cross Societies for support as costs rise and systems come under strain.

After the PUS launch, civil protection is stronger, cross‑sector coordination is improving & risk assessments are more robust.
The next phase is critical: progress must reach communities.
People need accessible, prepared and responsive systems that equip them for today’s risks.
'When we prepare together, Europe is stronger, safer and more confident.'
One year from the launch of the Preparedness Union Strategy, Commissioner @hadjalahbib opened the EU Preparedness Conference, bringing stakeholders together to review progress and shape next steps.
Communities worldwide are already facing the growing impacts of floods, droughts, storms and heatwaves. But before crises escalate, it is often local actors who are the first to act.

Yesterday, we contributed to a discussion organised by the Intergroup on Resilience, Civil Protection and Disaster Management at the European Parliament, together with colleagues from the @CroixRouge.
Our key message: societal preparedness starts with people.

The escalation of hostilities in the Middle East is affecting civilians on all sides.
In Iran, @Iranian_RCS has activated its network of volunteers across the country to deliver essential humanitarian services and provide support to people affected by the emergency.
Following the recent escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, the Magen David Adom @Mdais has mobilized staff and volunteers across the country.
Teams are treating and evacuating affected people to hospitals and transferring bedridden and ventilated patients to protected locations.
During Commissioner @hadjalahbib visit to Ukraine, @RedCrossUkraine explained how they are working with communities to strengthen their resilience: providing immediate humanitarian logistics support, while addressing the human and psychological impact of the prolonged winter.
Building resilient health systems requires strong collaboration across public institutions, private sector & civil society.
The upcoming EU Global Health Resilience Initiative should ensure this cooperation placing communities at the centre of health care design and delivery.
Heavy storms and floods across Portugal and Spain caused power cuts and damaged homes. @cruzvermelha_pt and @CruzRojaEsp volunteers are on the ground, where help is needed most.
