President @CyrilRamaphosa today announced that the licensing threshold for embedded generation projects would be lifted to 100 MW. This will unlock significant new investment in the energy sector and reduce the risk of load shedding. #SONA2021 #OperationVulindlela

Ah, but hundreds of thousands of jobs could be created if there’s a proactive transition to clean energy, with regular big auctions + deregulation of distributed generation. That requires leadership and an energy ministry out front, not stuck in the past biznews.com/thought-leaders/…

Solar PV now down to € 1.1 c/kWh. That’s ZAR 22 c/kWh. @Eskom_SA’s average tariff is ZAR 116 c/kWh
The marginal cost of solar is approaching the magical number of 1 euro cent per kilowatt hour! Latest auction in Portugal pegs the fixed-rate lot at 1.1 cent per kWh (25% less than in 2019). It still boggles my mind how far we have come. (short thread) portugal.gov.pt/pt/gc22/comu…

Every day of delay in implementing South Africa’s IRP electricity plan (and regulatory reform for distributed generation) means another day of @Eskom_SA power cuts
#PowerAlert 1 Eskom to implement Stage 2 loadshedding from 12:00 until 22:00 as power system is severely constrained @News24 @SABCNews @NewzroomAfrika @eNCA

Some question whether renewable energy can contribute to reliable electricity - the sun doesn’t always shine, wind doesn’t always blow, right? Well here’s how. An example from the UK over the past 4 days, complemented with gas, meeting full demand. Imagine larger solar here in SA

Local communities have already benefited from over R1 billion spent by IPPs on education such as upskilling of teachers, extra teachers & classrooms, and 600 bursaries to students from disadvantaged communities. #DidYouKnow

My piece in the Sunday Times today which exposes the fallacious arguments and cynical agendas of many of those who oppose South Africa’s Energy Minister ⁦@radebe_jeff⁩’s new electricity plan and competition from independent power producers

DoE (March 2018) confirmed 1 883 people directly employed by operational RE IPP projects i.e. 16% of Eskom generation's 12 000 employees. RE IPPs produce 4% of the power that Eskom does. This confirms: operating RE IPPs 4x more employment intensive than operating Eskom plants.

1) Electricity tariff more than doubled between 2008 and 2013. Medupi and Kusile construction started around 2008. 2) Electricity tariff was stable since 2013 until today. First RE energy was procured in late 2013.

600 million Africans have no access to electricity. Population increases are outstripping electrification rates & it's possible that in 2030 600 million will still be without while the rest of the world approaches 100% access. Lower cost off-grid solar& storage could change this

The winning bid in the IFC’s Scaling Solar auction in Senegal is €3.8 c/kWh. That’s ZAR 56c/kWh, way below the AVERAGE generation cost of South Africa’s electricity utility, @Eskom_SA, and a fraction of it’s NEW generation cost. Those who oppose future REIPPs are holding SA back
