I am recruiting for *two* PhD students to work on field swarm robotics. A great opportunity to work on real-world swarms (Leo Rovers) in lovely countryside.
Have also set up a new website, details here 🙂👉: huntlab.uk/join-us/
Please RT/share with students you know!

For the third time, @FTC has forced a company to destroy algorithms built with data gathered deceptively. Here's why it's a sign that algorithmic destruction is now a standard way the FTC will penalize companies. @jevanhutson @EPICprivacy @privacyforum

ICYMI: Twitter conducted one of the largest platform audits ever (randomized trial on 58 million users) to assess "political bias" of their algorithm. In 6 of 7 countries, "the mainstream political right enjoys higher algorithmic amplification than the mainstream political left."

Blockchain doesn’t create anarchy of course—it’s just another kind of paper—secure storage through redundancy, as systems engineering has recommended for decades. The problem is those who think relatively secure storage means you don’t need institutions to protect your interests.

Students often ask me: why do so many choose 5% as the threshold for significance (“alpha”)?
So let me try to explain the main rationale

In 2019 I was part of a large-scale Princeton study of dark patterns that has since influenced both the academic literature and the regulatory debate. arxiv.org/pdf/1907.07032.pdf
Today I want to talk about how we nearly squandered that impact because of a 2-word change.

False positives pose a real threat to the use of AI-support systems. This is especially true in Healthcare.
How do false positives impact clinicians? We studied the navigation, assessment, and perception of AI-enhanced footage (false and true positives) by endoscopists.

Whoa! I didn't know this. Computers are (or were?) legally presumed reliable in the UK! #AIA #DSA #AIEthics cc @tabithagold
A simplifying legal assumption temporarily smooths operations of government, but corrupts the integrity of the society that sustains both govt & commerce.
There was a change in law (an amendment to Police & Criminal Evidence Act 1984 which came into effect in 1999) back to the common law a presumption of reliability see Steven Mason’s evidence to the HoC Justice SC [committees.parliament.uk/wri…]. Post Office lobbied this change in law🤷
