A mother was being dragged across a parking lot by an SUV while her two babies were still trapped inside. Then 15 strangers came running from every direction, surrounding the vehicle in a desperate attempt to stop it.
It happened outside a DMV office in Jacksonville, Florida. A man had climbed behind the wheel of an SUV and was attempting to drive away with both children still in the back seat. Their mother was frantically trying to get them out when the driver accelerated, dragging her and one of her children through the parking lot.
But the people nearby weren’t about to stand there and watch. More than a dozen strangers rushed toward the SUV, surrounding the vehicle as the mother struggled to free her babies. Together, they managed to get her and both children to safety before the driver sped away.
And those strangers weren’t finished helping. Witnesses gave police the vehicle’s description and license plate number, helping officers track down and arrest the suspect later that same day.
A terrifying situation that could have ended in tragedy became an extraordinary reminder of what happens when ordinary people refuse to look away.
These heroes may have been strangers to that mother, but their courage helped bring her babies home safely. Let’s give them the recognition they deserve.

Right after she was rescued, we stabled Sibu next to black rhino Chamboi. He welcomed his new neighbour the classic Kaluku way – by tucking into her bounty of greens! We like to think he was saying, ‘Welcome to the family. Thanks for sharing. Push another snack through, please.’
After recovering from a spear wound to her shoulder, Sibu is ready to join our adoption programme. Read her full story: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/o…

Air Force pilot Joe Jackson was circling 9,000 feet above a Special Forces camp in Vietnam in his C-123 cargo plane, an aircraft with no guns, when the radio confirmed the last people had been flown out. Fighter jets were cleared to destroy what was left of the camp and the enemy with it. Then a voice broke in. 3 American airmen were still down there.
The camp was Kham Duc, May 12, 1968, and it was falling. Thousands of enemy troops had it surrounded. Ammunition dumps were exploding, 8 aircraft had already been destroyed, and the enemy held gun positions on the runway itself.
The 3 men, Maj. John Gallagher, Tech. Sgt. Mort Freedman and Staff Sgt. Jim Lundie, had been flown out earlier that day, then sent back in to help with the evacuation. Now everyone else was gone. They were hiding in a ditch beside the runway with 3 rifles. “I never felt so lonely in all my life,” Freedman said later.
Another C-123 went in first. It landed under heavy fire, the crew couldn’t find the men, and the pilot pushed the throttles forward to get out. Just before liftoff they spotted the 3 men in the ditch, but it was too late to stop. The men watched what they thought was their last hope take off without them.
Jackson was next. He had flown fighters in World War II and Korea, and he knew the enemy gunners expected him to come in low and slow like every cargo plane before him. So he didn’t.
He pointed the nose down and dove almost straight at the runway from 9,000 feet. The gunners were caught by surprise. He pulled out just above the trees and landed on a strip littered with debris, where a wrecked helicopter had cut the usable runway to 2,200 feet.
The 3 men ran for the plane and were pulled aboard. As they climbed in, a rocket skidded to a stop less than 25 feet from the nose. It didn’t explode.
Jackson taxied around it and pushed the throttles all the way forward. Within 10 seconds, mortar rounds were landing on the spot they had just left. Tracers crossed the runway ahead of them.
The plane had been on the ground for less than a minute. It took off through the fire with all 3 men aboard, the last Americans out of Kham Duc. “When I looked up and saw that C-123 coming in, it was like a miracle,” Lundie said.
It was his 296th combat mission in Vietnam. President Lyndon Johnson presented him the Medal of Honor at the White House. Jackson passed away in 2019 at 95. 🫡 🇺🇸 ♥️

Comedy used to be about anything and everything. Nothing was off limits, nobody was above being made fun of, and comedians weren't afraid to offend somebody.
Back in 1996, George Carlin released his HBO special Back in Town, and this clip is a perfect example of what I'm talking about.
Carlin was joking about a future where public executions would be televised as entertainment, keeping Americans distracted while the wealthy and powerful continued screwing them over.
Think about that. He was taking something absolutely outrageous, making people laugh about it, and at the same time delivering some pretty serious criticism of American society.
That's what comedians like Carlin, Richard Pryor, Don Rickles, and Joan Rivers were so good at. Politics, religion, race, sex, government, nothing was off limits.
They made us laugh at things we probably weren't supposed to laugh at. Sometimes they made us uncomfortable, and sometimes they made us think.
Comedy wasn't supposed to be safe, sanitized, and carefully worded so nobody got their feelings hurt.
I miss the days when comedians could say what everybody else was thinking, and we could all just laugh about it.
When did we decide comedy needed permission to be funny?

That beer stays put because the gun is built to hold its aim while the hull bounces over rough ground.
The Leopard 2 entered West German service in 1979 with a fully stabilised 120 mm Rheinmetall gun.
Paired with the EMES 15 fire control system and a stabilised sight, it was designed to hit moving targets up to 5,000 m away while driving over rough terrain.
Best piece of military marketing ever filmed, if you ask me.

Depending on which dynasty was in power, the wall wasn’t even all that necessary. “The Tang, who ruled from 618 to 907AD built virtually no walls, because the imperial family was part Turkic and skilled in Central Asian warfare and diplomacy,” writes Peter Hessler for the New Yorker. During the Ming Dynasty, the wall was one of three strategies for dealing with the Mongols. The other two included taking the offensive and buying off important leaders with gifts or access to trade.
Scientists at Zhejiang University in China were researching the makeup of mortar used for building the Great Wall when they realized something unusual was added to the standard mixture of lime (limestone that has been heated to a high temperature) and water: sticky rice. The mixture made it the world’s first example of composite mortar, including organic and inorganic material. In their tests, the scientists compared the quality of mortar made with and without sticky rice, and found that “sticky rice-lime mortar has more stable physical properties, has greater mechanical storage, and is more compatible, which make it a suitable restoration mortar for ancient masonry.” Using sticky rice as a construction ingredient was one of the greatest innovations of the Ming dynasty, helping their structures (including tombs and pagodas as well) survive earthquakes and the elements, researchers said.
While it might be a source of national pride today, the Great Wall hasn’t always received so much love. Approximately one-third of the structure is crumbling, 20 percent is in “reasonable” condition, and the last half has disappeared after centuries of neglect. During the deadly Cultural Revolution (a 10-year movement initiated by Mao Zedong that resulted in the killing of 1.5 million Chinese and millions more imprisoned and tortured), Chairman Mao and other officials encouraged the dismantlingof the wall for use as bricks to build homes. And while it may be state-protected today, farmers living in rural areas continue to use the bricks to build homes and animal pens.
