This is incredible. This machine is capable of cleaning up 100 million kg of plastic ocean waste, and as of 2025, it has already collected about 500,000 kg of plastic. It aims to remove 90% of ocean plastic by 2040.

Bravo Denis Noble! Good description of Penrose non-computability in conscious processing and the Orch OR theory.
We do things more slowly than AI, but we produce surprise: out-of-distribution behavior like creativity. Like Beethoven, who brought novelty to classical music. Denis Noble hypothesizes that this capacity for ‘surprise’ comes from vast stochasticity. A bacterium has over 20 billion water molecules. Imagine the amount of stochasticity happening in a human body. Would silicon based AI be capable of out-of-distribution surprise behavior?

In Arthur Schopenhauer essay, ‘Transcendent Speculations on the Fate of the Individual’, he talks about a hidden power. “The lives of all men should have as much concentus and harmony in their interlocking as the composer knows how to give to the many voices of his symphony that seem to rage through one another. Our awe of that colossal thoughts will also be lessened if we remember that the subject of the great dream of life is in a certain sense only one thing, the will to live, and that all multiplicity of appearance is conditioned by time and space. It is a great dream that One Being Dreams; but in such a way that all the characters dream it with him. Hence everything interlocks and fits together.” Here is Joseph Campbell on Schopenhauer essay. He points out that, “when you reach an advanced age and look back over your lifetime, it can seem to have had a consented order and plan, as though composed by some novelist. Events that when they occurred had seemed accidental and of little mention turn out to have been indispensable factors in the composition of a consistent plot. So who composed that plot? Just a s your dreams are composed by an aspect of yourself of which your consciousness is unaware, so, too, your whole life is composed by the will within you. And just as people whom you will have met apparently by mere chance become leading agents in the structuring of your life, so, too, will you have served unknowingly as an agent, giving meaning to the lives of others. The whole thing gears together like one big symphony, with everything unconsciously structuring everything else. That it is as though our lives were the feature of one great dream of a single dreamer in which all the dream characters dream too, so that everything links to everything else. Moved by the one will in life which is the universal will in nature.” From that, this is the quote you see everywhere, attributed to Schopenhauer. “The Universe is a dream dreamed by a single dreamer where all the dream characters dream too.”

Intellect is a platonic form. An idea in the mind of God. Human intelligence is a shadow of divine intelligence. Artificial intelligence is a shadow of Human intelligence. Stop worshiping dark patterns on the cave wall.

A little over a week from now, I’ll be in New Jersey for a rare East Coast event. We’ll explore the possibility that spacetime is not fundamental, and what that might tell us about the nature of reality. Join us: hvstage.org/event/donald-hof… Thank you!

Does Consciousness Break the Laws of Physics? Physicist Avshalom Elitzur thinks so—and argues in our conversation that accounting for consciousness may require changing the laws of physics. Say what? skeptic.com/michael-shermer-…

We often assume that our memories are stored in our brains, just like a hard drive stores data. bit.ly/4AfiMbS In this talk, philosopher Victoria Trumbull argues this is a radical mistake: she argues that the brain enables memory without containing it, and that time itself stores memory.

I don’t think that. But I do think some conscious human A-hole could program an AI to do so.
Dude, if you honestly think a nonlocal function that is not self aware can decide to unilaterally, without initator input, act on humanity "without any microtubules as the causal source" then you have "by definition" recognised "microtubules are NOT the source, but byproduct" 🤔
