Imagine a man having the worst week of his life. Someone he loves has died. He has lost his job. His finances are falling apart. He is exhausted, stressed, and overwhelmed. For many men, that is exactly what they need. Because when everything around a man is falling apart, when his world is filled with destruction, disorder, and chaos, one of the most powerful antidotes is creation. And sex is fundamentally a creative, generative act. It is an affirmation of life in the face of destruction. It is an opportunity to reconnect with the woman he loves, to experience pleasure, affection, intimacy, and the possibility of creating new life. When everything else is going wrong, it reminds him that he is alive, that he is loved, and that there is still something beautiful and worthwhile in the world. For him, sex can be restorative. It gives him the strength to get up tomorrow and face the world again. Many women experience the same circumstances differently. When a woman is overwhelmed, exhausted, and emotionally depleted, her instinct is often to retreat. She wants solitude, quiet, rest, and an opportunity to recover her energy. Under those circumstances, sex may feel like one more demand being placed upon her when she has nothing left to give. And this is where men and women can fundamentally misunderstand one another. What she experiences as another demand upon her depleted resources, he may experience as the very thing that restores his. Of course, these are general tendencies. Some men withdraw under stress, and some women seek intimacy. Personality, temperament, and individual circumstances all matter. But the broader pattern is familiar enough that most men and women will recognize themselves in it. When his world is falling apart, a man may instinctively reach for the woman he loves because the creative act of making love is his way of answering destruction with life. And that is something I wish more women understood about men.
