Today sees a major step forward in evidence-based practice in children’s social care 👏@educationgovuk’s move to mandate family–led approaches by local authorities can help divert children from care and ensure they stay with their families where it’s safe to do so. This decision is based on our evidence that #FamilyGroupConferences (FGCs) have a significant impact in reducing the number of children who go into care. We worked with @Coram on the first ever FGC trial in the UK involving 2,500 children in 1,500 families. It showed that children whose families were offered an FGC before court proceedings were less likely than those not referred to be in care one year later. We welcome the government’s commitment to early, evidence-based interventions in children’s social care to ensure that children and families receive effective support at critical moments: gov.uk/government/publicatio…

The new Government faces the worst inheritance Do we have the patience to give it time to actually fix Britain? Can we resist the snake oil salesman standing in the margins pretending it's all easy? That answer will determine whether Britain enjoys a decade of renewal or not

I’m heartbroken at the passing today of my friend and former boss Alistair Darling. All my love to Maggie, Calum and Anna. Already people have honed in on his fundamental integrity and decency. I remember him for his kindness, humour and friendship

My memories are of laughing a lot, especially when things got tough (which they did). Gallows humour was his favourite. Every weekend, I’d say ‘see you next week’ and he’d answer ‘if we’re spared’. He had incredible work ethic. He would devour his ministerial box

His trademark was unhurried, thoughtful, judgment. The civil service loved him for it. To this day, I still regularly meet civil servants who take me aside and when they think no one can hear whisper ‘he was my favourite minister’
