Secession was not a southern idea. Northern states threatened secession at least 5 times during America’s first 60 years:
1. The first time came in George Washington’s presidency when Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton warned that the Northern states would secede unless the Federal Government agreed to assume an obligation to pay off their Revolutionary War debts.
2.In 1803, New Englanders threatened secession over the Louisiana Purchase. They worried that the new territories would ultimately become new states thereby reducing New England’s influence.
3. In 1807, New England again threatened secession after America announced a trade embargo, hoping to avoid the War of 1812, by use of economic sanctions.
4. When the British finally blockaded New England during the last seven months of the thirty-month war, the region held a convention in Hartford to discuss secession or other steps to protect their interests from Federal powers.
5. As late as 1844, leaders in the Northeastern states threatened to secede over the proposed annexation of Texas.

The account of Columbus’s first voyage shows how tightly he tied the trip to the religious goals of Ferdinand and Isabella.
In the introduction to his journal he calls the monarchs Christian rulers who opposed the teachings of Muhammad:
“IN THE NAME OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. Whereas, Most Christian, High, Excellent, and Powerful Princes, King and Queen of Spain and of the Islands of the Sea, our Sovereigns, this present year 1492, after your Highnesses had terminated the war with the Moors reigning in Europe, the same having been brought to an end in the great city of Granada, where on the second day of January, this present year, I saw the royal banners of your Highnesses planted by force of arms upon the towers of the Alhambra, which is the fortress of that city, and saw the Moorish king come out at the gate of the city and kiss the hands of your Highnesses, and of the Prince my Sovereign; and in the present month, in consequence of the information which I had given your Highnesses respecting the countries of India and of a Prince, called Great Can, which in our language signifies King of Kings, how, at many times he, and his predecessors had sent to Rome soliciting instructors who might teach him our holy faith, and the holy Father had never granted his request, whereby great numbers of people were lost, believing in idolatry and doctrines of perdition. Your Highnesses, as Catholic Christians, and princes who love and promote the holy Christian faith, and are enemies of the doctrine of Mahomet, and of all idolatry and heresy, determined to send me, Christopher Columbus, to the above-mentioned countries of India, to see the said princes, people, and territories, and to learn their disposition and the proper method of converting them to our holy faith; and furthermore directed that I should not proceed by land to the East, as is customary, but by a Westerly route, in which direction we have hitherto no certain evidence that any one has gone.”

In Ben-Hur, there is a moment of extraordinary simplicity and grace. Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston), exhausted and broken in the desert, is silently offered water by Jesus. We never see Christ’s face; only his figure and presence are revealed.
Not a word is spoken, yet Judah’s expression moves almost imperceptibly from despair to hope. William Wyler’s masterful cinematography gives the encounter an unmistakable sense of the sacred, suggesting that something far greater than an act of human kindness has taken place.
It is a brief gesture, a cup of water offered to a suffering man, yet it becomes the seed of Judah’s long journey towards mercy, reconciliation and forgiveness. In its restraint, silence and humanity, it remains one of the most moving scenes in the history of cinema.

But the “reformation” did absolutely nothing of the kind, as countless very pious protestant converts—including many pastors, theologians, etc.—have discovered (and become Catholic as a result).
Dr. David Anders was one of them. He was an avowed Calvinist, and pursued his PhD in order to disprove the Catholic Church and affirm the “reformation.”
After a decade, he came out Catholic. He discovered there was absolutely nothing like protestantism ANYWHERE in ancient Christianity. Instead, he found the Catholic Church.

For the first time in nearly 50 years, Italy is celebrating October 4 as a national holiday honoring St. Francis of Assisi, its patron saint. The holiday was restored by Parliament under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government and took effect in 2026.
