Here at Phoenix Fan Fusion, lmk if you're here. Unfortunately, no sign ups for my games since the convention website UI is pretty bad. Big old model might not get combat today... Fort Tortuga remains undefeated.
Ya know, I feel like its important to get back to a place that lets you be creative. For me, the city can be claustrophobic, and there's barely any room to breathe. Out here, I feel more free. With some luck, this vacation will let me get back to posting regularly 馃
Celebrating my 28th. 馃コ
I've had a lot of well wishes, but I did want to take a few seconds to say thanks to my friends on here. While yall are all the gift I need, try to do something nice for someone today for someone a present to me.
Hopefully, this'll be a good year. 馃嵒
Back to back, two PCs go down after fighting Sirens.
The most hopeless I've seen a player was after delivering this line-
"You get pulled under the water, out of sight of your companions as the cold water fills your lungs. They like watching their victims drown."
Turns out that running a high seas horror campaign has really helped get me out of my DM funk. The ocean is terrifying as hell, and taking ques from The Odyssey has been quite gratifying. I guess my little DM tip for yall is to switch the genera of the game when things get stale.
I'm feeling a bit better, thanks for the well wishes. Now, I'm thinking about doing something crazy and doing a mini painting livestream of the giant turtle for a few hours Friday. Are there platform preferences? Are people even interested in something like that?
I'm happy to see TikTok go. I un-installed that 3-4 years ago because I realized it was a time suck. After that, I started a couple of businesses, got a dog, got in shape, and try to do more with the time I have. The irony of the name is how much time is wasted on that app.
As a relatively based Gen Z, I think our parents failed us. You stopped paying attention to what was taught in schools and tolerated the changes in society that made my generation morally sick. Now, by and large, we reject everything from your generation, including its morals.
I've noticed a trend since 5e to promote moral relativism in games, and changing the Paladin is just one aspect of that. This trend also includes allowing evil PCs, saying that races/monsters can't be inherantly evil (but somehow white men can lol), replacing the more rigid concept of alignments with a morally grey "do as thou wilt" mentality, promoting morally reprehensible sexual fetishes and mental illness as acceptible and even preferred behavior within the hobby, etc. The game has changed to appeal to a new generation, but why are these things appealing?! It seems like new players who want these changes are just morally and ethically depraved sexual deviants. They are "evil" but want their evilness to be normalized. They can't play oldschool Paladins because they themselves hate religion and the very idea of moral superiority.
Absolutely agree on the first two points, but I think there's an argument for XP. Kills to XP doesn't translate well, but it's a good way to measure skills. The more you use a skill, the better you are at it. Rework the idea instead of toss it imo. 馃嵒
Here is why I gave up on D&D in 1978.
1) Alignment. To see what I mean, look at the tortured way they tried to explain Elric of Melnibone as a chaotic evil hero in 1st edition Deities & Demigods.
2) Levels. Does not match anything in the real world. Does a 9th level insurance salesman have more HP than a 4th level US Marine?
3) Experience points. Again, doesn't match anything in the real world. "At 3 xp per orc, fireballing orc villages really adds up."
Examples from literature. In one RE Howard story, Conan is robbing a house, and is apprehended by an (obviously 1st level) guard who has a crossbow. Conan, who is unarmored, surrenders because he doesn't want to be shot by the crossbow. No D&D fighter above 1st level would have surrendered.
In a Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser story, Fafhrd is fighting two ordinary soldiers, and Fritz Leiber takes pains to explain that even a skilled swordsman like Fafhrd is in real trouble facing two trained soldiers. Again, doesn't match D&D reality.
I'm not claiming RuneQuest, Traveller, or Call of Cthulhu are 100% realistic but at least the most obvious clinkers are weeded out.
This is a bit of a rough draft, but I think that a fantasy ttrpg needs to build itself with its magic system in mind. This is the starting point for all of Godkin. The pantheon, the magic, the terrain, even the fact its a d10 based system come back to this. Lmk if you want more.
A number of you have been friends for a while. If youll indulge the question, why do you follow me, and what do you think I should focus on going forward? I've done game design, memes, some culture commentary around the gaming space, and some creative writing. Just curious. Thx.
Another successful session. They... didn't kill it. 馃槄
May the gods guide the souls of their characters to a peaceful rest.
"The land of Torpor," could be a low-level mystery where a number of settlers went missing in a beautiful land. Either harpies, or some other 'pretty' monster with a charm effect would do nicely here. Bonus points if they have a symbiotic relationship with some dryads. 馃嵒
DM as a celestial: You kill your own kind without a second thought, and you banish anyone who doesn't agree with you. What makes you think you're worthy to rule this kingdom?
Player: Was there not a war in heaven? We learned from the best.
Sometimes sessions hit different...
