My main take-aways from the results so far. 1) Mail-in ballots are popular. 2) No one votes on election day anymore. 3) A quarter of Albertans are totally fed up with Ottawa. 4) Thomas Lukaszuk is 1 for 9. 5) The Uniparty is alive and well. 6) Smith got a mandate to carry on doing nothing. 7) The UCP party is fractured. 8) A bunch of politicians became strange bedfellows. 9) Carney can resume his agenda as setout in his book. 10) Employment will increase by 20,000 in October The Status Quo won. Nothing will change.

Dictatorship Canada
“Don’t be fooled by the idea that you can send a message with your vote.” Those words from Prime Minister Mark Carney have stayed with me. I find it deeply disappointing to hear our country’s highest elected leader speak that way about a democratic referendum. For decades, Albertans have been asking for meaningful changes to our relationship with Ottawa. And today, we have an opportunity to make our voices heard on one of the most significant questions in our province’s history. I believe Albertans deserve to be heard, to be respected, and to have a genuine seat at the table when decisions about our future are being made. What Ottawa chooses to do with the outcome remains to be seen. And perhaps, someday, Albertans will decide it’s time to build a table of our own. Whatever your convictions, please take the time to understand the question and cast your ballot today. I’ll be voting yes to the nine and Option 2!! October 19th. A historic day for Alberta. #AlbertaReferendum #LetAlbertaDecide #Alberta #October19 #VoteOption2

The result wasn’t what we’d hoped for, but I refuse to overlook how far we’ve come. In just one year, the conversation about Alberta’s future has gone from kitchen tables and community halls to the national and international stage. The world is paying attention. And more importantly, Albertans are talking. That alone is an extraordinary accomplishment. The concerns that brought us here haven’t disappeared with the results of a referendum. And for those who believe Alberta’s future is best served within Canada, I sincerely hope you’ll help keep the pressure on Ottawa to address them. To Keith, our Let Alberta Decide team, our volunteers, and every Albertan who stood alongside us, thank you. It has been the honour of my lifetime. This farm girl never imagined finding herself here, but somewhere along the way, I found hope. And I haven’t lost it. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished, grateful for the people I’ve met, and certain this conversation is far from over. The vote may be behind us, but the questions that brought us here remain. I hope Ottawa is paying attention. May Alberta be forever strong and free. #LetAlbertaDecide #Alberta #AlbertaIndependence #AlbertaReferendum

The ballots are still being counted, but one thing is already clear: rebuilding public trust will take far more than a referendum result. Whatever your position on the referendum, the concerns that brought Albertans to this point deserve serious answers. Affordability. Safe communities. Functioning health care. Public services that actually serve the public. Public trust will not be restored by dismissing those concerns or insulting the people raising them. It starts with the willingness to have adult conversations, answer difficult questions and acknowledge where governments have failed. What does it mean to live in a free and open democracy if citizens are ridiculed for questioning the direction of their own country? What does a kind and inclusive society mean if that kindness and inclusion disappear the moment someone disagrees? You cannot claim those values while treating people who challenge you as though they do not belong. That is particularly true of so-called leaders who ask for our trust while showing so little respect for the citizens they serve. To everyone who asked questions, had difficult conversations and voted: keep participating. Democracy requires more than casting a ballot. It requires room to disagree, challenge the status quo and consider a different future. You want citizens to believe in this country? Give them reasons to. Answer their questions. Take their concerns seriously. Show them that the freedom, respect and inclusion you speak of extend to them, too. This should not be this difficult or controversial!

Don't lose sight of what happened last night. A grassroots movement of Albertans stood against Canada's political, media and academic establishment and won the support of one in four voters. The next phase begins now.

Replying to @ElectionsAB
@ElectionsAB I received this message from a scrutineer … “I have been scrutineering during the referendum I have seen many people taking someone into the voting booth with them Mostly foreigners who clearly can’t speak/read English Many going in as a family unit 2~4 people in one booth And many muslims who hold the wife by the arm & show them how to mark the ballot None of the elections Alberta people seem to even blink at this during the process” I replied that this behaviour is completely illegal. Is Elections Alberta doing something to stop this?
