Johann Sebastian Bach’s Toccata in D major, BWV 912 (c.1710): one of the most theatrical and electrifying works of Bach’s youth. Its powerful, seemingly improvised opening gives way to a more structured dialogue between contrasting themes. An expressive recitative leads into an unusual Adagio in F-sharp minor, conceived almost like a fugue but with the character of a lamento. The drama then builds again through a second recitative before erupting into fireworks. The final section, a wild dance reminiscent of a gigue, races through a remarkable succession of keys. This is Bach at his most tempestuous: bold, rhapsodic, harmonically adventurous, and seemingly determined to push every boundary. No autograph manuscript survives, and later sources may have “cleaned up” some of his daring harmonic and contrapuntal writing.
