After the Lesson | Whose words? A child chose to write about Ronaldinho. Look at what emerged. A dictated sentence might have produced greater accuracy. But would it have revealed as much about this young writer? Teach the skills. Keep the child the author.

Sweden is a cautionary tale for Scottish education. After years of pushing digital-first learning and replacing textbooks with screens, the government is now spending millions to bring real books back into classrooms. Not because technology is evil, but because overuse of screens weakened reading, focus and deep learning. Foundational skills need paper, books and explicit teaching. Digital tools should support learning, not replace it.
