The best time for sustainable redevelopment was decades ago. The next best time is today.

Sustainable redevelopment happens site by site, brick by brick, block by block, and community by community, repurposing building materials and adding nature in the process. #CircularEconomy

Cities can be a green jungle too and not just a concrete jungle of heat and pollution Why are cities around the world not doing this now

The best time to plant trees in anticipation of hotter summers was 20 years ago. The next best time is today.

Every sheep in the UK has to be shorn for its welfare. There is no choice. Yet the heartbreaking reality is that it often costs more to shear a sheep than the fleece is worth. So tonnes of beautiful British wool are treated as waste, burned, buried or composted, while we fill our wardrobes with synthetic fibres made from oil that shed microplastics into our rivers and seas. It feels as though somewhere along the way we’ve forgotten the value of the things nature gives us so generously. British wool is warm, breathable, biodegradable, renewable and grown every single year by animals already grazing our countryside. It deserves to be treasured, not thrown away. Perhaps the answer isn’t to produce more. Perhaps it’s to remember what we’ve always had, and start valuing natural materials, skilled craftsmanship and the people who produce them once again.

There are politicians pushing unsustainable development over nature who already know (or should reasonably know) their actions are counter to the public interest. So, yes, document the ask for sustainable redevelopment, and hold them accountable to it. xitter.cf/ReadLyte/status/206764…
We will see more governments sued for not doing enough sustainable redevelopment.

Sustainable Redevelopment = Replacing unsustainable development. Removing and replacing what has already been built and established unsustainably. Replacing that which contributes to and worsens, for example, climate challenges. Replacing what is not ready for climate challenges.

Puerto Rico is on fire
Canada is on fire. Europe is on fire. The Amazon is on fire. Cities are breaking heat records. Rivers are drying up. Other countries are drowning in floods. Storms are getting stronger. Seasons don’t feel like seasons anymore. And somehow… climate change is still a debate.

I've never seen anything like it. Salta, Argentina, has just recorded its hottest night on record during the climatologically coldest time of the year. The minimum overnight temperature did not fall below 26°C (78.8°F), pulverizing the previous monthly record by 7°C.

This isn’t the time to be clearing 2,000 hectares of forests for more unsustainable development. This is the time to be clearing 2,000 hectares of unsustainable development for more forests and other sustainable redevelopment.

389,000 trees. Gone. Over 2,000 hectares of forests. Cleared. All to expand coal projects while governments lecture citizens about sustainability. Every tree lost means dirtier air, hotter cities, disappearing wildlife, drying rivers & stolen futures for our children.

In Puteaux, just outside of La Défense - the business district of Paris - they are building a new Paris. Old slums (bidonvilles) and industry is making place for Haussmann-inspired apartment buildings and skyscrapers with a French aesthetic.

It’s easy to live off the crumbs of legacy urbanism, built before the age of mass car ownership. Harder to admit its continual erosion, and closure of schools, shops, industry, pubs & bars inside cities. The test of a human-scale policy now is whether that erosion is acknowledged, measured and an attempt made to reverse it.
