Bob Woodward and Richard G. Darman first met in 1973, during the Watergate affair, which Woodward was covering for the Washington Post. At that time, Darman was a top aide to the Attorney General, Elliot Richardson. Over the next decades, “Darman was what I call a ‘hide in plain sight’ source, because it was widely known that we were close friends,” Woodward writes. “Not known, but perhaps suspected, was that he was a pipeline for me into the White House during the Presidencies of Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush.” During the Bush Administration, Darman served as the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, and was instrumental in Bush’s economic policy. He persuaded Bush to break his “no new taxes” pledge to voters. When Woodward took an assignment to cover the economy—and Bush’s blunders—over a four part series for the Post, Darman was betrayed. “I said that the two of us had grown too close,” Woodward recalls. “No,” Darman replied, “the two of us did not get too close. Despite the portrait and the charges that I am Machiavellian and manipulative, in fact, I’m a fairly simple, ordinary person, and friendships are important.” Bob Woodward remembers the friendship he shared with Darman—and its ultimate demise. “I should have realized the danger,” he writes. “I didn’t want to lose him or his information channel.” newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

My mom became the first woman police officer in our hometown back in the ‘70s. She had to scale a wall for the physical fitness test, and after months of practice, she could do it faster than the men. She taught me how to make a goal, plan for it, and execute it. I've carried that my whole life.

I hopped on the train from Chicago back home to Michigan. I break down why I’m focused on the idea that we should speed up trains between Chicago and Detroit, and Detroit to Toronto! In Michigan we love our cars and driving, but taking the train is a great way to travel, and we can make it better.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) & Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) have alarming readout of their conversation with Vlodymyr Zelenskyy: “Pres. Zelenskyy confirmed that critical Starlink services remain degraded, including on systems traveling at speeds above 100 miles per hour, impeding Ukraine’s ability to intercept Russian drones. He also reported disruptions to U.S. intelligence sharing concerning early warning of Russian ballistic missile launches. As a result of these disruptions, civilians – children – are dying"

Inside an ICE facility, women talked about the 911 calls that landed them there — from men who had beat them, choked them, threatened deportation. “I had suffered from domestic violence,” one woman said. “But the one who ended up in trouble was me.” propublica.org/article/domes…
