⚖️This is why I’m voting NO on Question 6.⚖️
Question 6 asks Albertans to support a constitutional change so provincial governments, not the federal government, select King’s Bench and Court of Appeal justices.
Alberta is already in the room.
Four of the seven seats on the screening committee come from Alberta institutions: the Chief Justice of Alberta, the Law Society of Alberta, CBA Alberta, and Alberta’s Minister of Justice. That design is for Albertans, not for whichever party happens to be in office.
The courts should outlast the government of the day. Handing the final pick to provincial political leaders would not make the bench more Alberta. It would make it more partisan.
Vote NO on Question 6.
