I was flabbergasted to see @CityofKitchener staff destroying the naturalized garden in front of Huron NATURAL Area this morning ahead of the FOREST Festival. They cut down all the native sumac trees that were planted intentionally to create a natural habitat space.

We saw small creatures scampering away, their homes destroyed. We saw snails with their shells crushed by the mower. We saw caches of nuts strewn about after squirrels had carefully stored them for winter. We saw an entire habitat area razed to the ground for no reason.

It is hard to imagine why anyone would think this was a good idea, particularly ahead of a festival meant to celebrate this beautiful natural area. This was an unacceptable use of city resources & an egregious desecration of a much loved natural area & environmental sanctuary.
