I've never once brought up skill or difficulty when talking about Phantom Blade Zero. My criticisms lie solely with its design principles and execution.
The term 'skill issue' has the same effect in gaming that calling someone an 'ist' or a 'phobe' does in the broader world.
It's a rhetorical device used by brain rotted normie-slop who can't handle cognitive abstraction to short circuit the conversation so they can rest on lazy cliches.
The game is a mediocre mess of 30 year-old linear level design, interminable story sequences of web drama quality, and some of the most chaotic, haphazard and unclear visual combat language I've ever experienced in a game.
Its success is a complete mystery to me.
Or at least it would be, if I didn't understand the human brain.
People are sold spectacle over substance all the time. With their politics. With their food. With their music. PBZ simply does it with their game instead.
Its gloriously flashy visuals hide the skeleton of a 30 year-old progression system, a high school drama narrative, and all the combat cadence of two teenagers violently masturbating on each other.
It's not only devoid of any coherent combat design language, it's in fact the complete antithesis of it.
This isn't an action game - it's an IQ test.
PS. The developer explicitly said they weren't making a soulslike because they didn't want their game to be punishing.
If you default to 'skill issue' to defend your beloved spectacle slop, you're actually helping make the point that they failed at executing their own design brief.
One of the worst designed boss fights I've ever experienced.
This is phase 3 (yes there's more before this).
Constant attack spam. Off-screen attacks. Grabs. Noise everywhere. No cadence.
Game is made for 12 year olds.

I need people to stop treating soulslikes as this “tryhard” genre
Like it’s getting tiring at this point
And these “frustrations” they wanted to remove just take away from the game instead of adding to it
The creators of Phantom Blade Zero don’t want players to suffer like they do in Dark Souls. According to the head of S-Game, life is already hard enough without having to struggle in video games too.
The developers have tried to eliminate unnecessary frustration while keeping combat spectacular and intense:
Death carries no major penalties.
Defeated enemies do not respawn.
Boss fights feature checkpoints between phases, so players won’t have to restart the entire battle.
Three difficulty settings are available: Easy, Normal, and Hard.
A permadeath mode unlocks after completing the game.
“We want as many people as possible to have fun, relax, and enjoy the game. And for those seeking a challenge, we’ll offer an extra dose of adrenaline.”
The core philosophy behind Phantom Blade Zero is to make players feel incredibly powerful rather than punish them for every mistake.

Man, even washed Platinum Games post-Bayonetta 3 mogs most hack and slash games these days. That is both depressing and funny
The current trend of parry-based games actually makes games easier by dumbing down the defensive gameplay and centralising a series of decisions into a single timing-based mechanic
Parrying should be the cherry on top, not the whole cake

DMC, Ninja Gaiden and Bayonetta isn't dodge slop. Nor has anyone described them as that.
based on twitter, there are 3 types of action games lol.
Dodge slop: DMC, Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta, Nier
Souls Slop: Dark Souls, Elden Ring, Bloodborne
Parry Slop: Phantom Blade 0, Onimusha, Stellar Blade.
just play what you like, pick your poison, different strokes for different folks at this point.
There’s actually entirely different defensive systems that don’t strictly rely on any of these mechanics. They rely on positioning, aggression and crowd control. They can even include parries and dodges without making them the be-all/end-all of the combat
Bring that back pls

wouldnt it be so crazy and unique if they made a game where you press LB at the right time to negate all damage? nobodys ever done that before…

"Finally, a action game that's not a souls-like" says a guy excited for yet another suck-to-target parryslop.

Can we please for the love of God get an action game without parries. I am so sick of this mechanic 😞

Difference between a good game with flashy animations and instead a great game design of a combat system with a clear vision, depth, mechanics, lots of tools that offer so many different approaches defensive and offensive.
Team Ninja is the absolute king of combat systems 🔥
