Vines, so luxuriant they had about them an unwholesomely sinister quality, had wrapped themselves around the black basalt monolith. Here and there between them I could glimpse the shockingly abhorrent outlines of creatures born of an insane universe, carved on the stone.
The river runs down through the wild country and after colossal storms that rage up on the mountains, flood waters bring with them animals and sometimes other, less identifiable things. These are the subject of wild rumour and hint at things in the mountains that are best unseen
There appeared out of the clearing mists a fabulous and terrible city. Numberless towers of black basalt masonry reached to vertiginous heights and seemed almost to extend into the vast skyey voids above. Lit only by the full moon, the city appeared silent and shockingly ancient.
Dark and tangled trees surround my dwelling. I’ve not seen another human for years but each night I hear certain unwholesome noises from among the tree tops and sometimes in the morning I see footprints around my cottage. I should not like to see what made those footprints.

I came across the village quite by accident. Dark and foreboding streets nestled in a valley untroubled by the sun. I think they still practice the old rights and customs here to appease ancient things that inhabit the surrounding countryside. I fear I will never leave this place
I hear an ominously low hum coming from the cellar. It’s accompanied by a dry, rustling noise and a damnable tapping sound as if hundreds of legs were propelling some unclean species of insect to ascend the steps to the room above. I wonder if I locked the cellar door.

I shudder at the prospect of that hideous agitated spectre appearing once more. Its visage and the ghastly noises it makes are my punishment for forcing Henry to read aloud from that blasphemous book. It caused his destruction at the hands of what was called by his chants
I feel I’ve been here for a thousand years. I can’t see but I don’t know if it’s because I’m blind or there’s an absence of light. Either way, I feel I’m becoming one with the creatures that I know are crowding in on me. I can’t see them but hear their voices calling me home
There appeared in front of me a creature born of an insane universe. Its anatomy was wholly alien and suggested other worlds, other realities. As I watched transfixed, the top of its head unhinged and from inside there emerged a mass of writhing tentacles.
Thaddeus is out there now in the garden. He’s talking to them things again. I thought he’d gone mad at first and perhaps he has. Raving about things he’d seen up in the sky and amongst the trees but I’m starting to see them myself now. Shadowy figures becoming more real.
Walking at dusk through a dense woodland area I was suddenly struck by a singular sense of dread, followed by a strange and uncanny vision. A child, unkempt and sickly looking appeared in front of me before rising silently into the air and disappearing into the dense canopy above
I looked upon the empty house with a dread that I can scarce describe. The vacant windows, black in contrast to the moonlit sky, hid what lurked behind them. Halloween house, as it was known locally, was uninhabited but for the spectres of the past and I knew I was one of them.
I saw such wonders on that moonlit night so long ago. Fabulous creatures both alien and exotic. They appeared out of the wastelands to take back what was always theirs before fading back into the bleak landscape. I see them in my dreams but know they have gone forever.
I hear the sounds every night. An unwholesome blubbery noise precedes a dreadful chattering, which gives rise to an image in my mind, of sharp ravenous teeth. I'm unsure if the sounds are in my head or within the walls of my bedroom. Either way they will drive me to insanity.
loathsome creatures appeared from the pit. Of their faces I will not speak other than to say their features had about them some hideous union between a frog and a bat. They danced about wildly and issued certain unwholesome barking noises which will haunt my dreams until death.
My dreams are nightly plagued by terrible visions of the star headed, winged fungi that will inhabit Earths future after the fall of man. From the vast icy voids of space their spores will reach Earth in the distant future when man is no more than a geological impression.
A creature, grey and pulpy in appearance, appeared in front of me from the darkness. As I watched, it's face began to sprout with hideous blue fungi, each equipped with a tiny screaming mouth. I think I went mad then.
One of the flowers that I picked from the garden earlier just tried to bite me. It sits in the vase now screaming at me or sometimes laughing oddly, while it’s petals writhe in a way that I do not like. The noises it makes are strangely human, but with a repellent alien quality.
