I wore this shirt into Publix. “BLACK PEOPLE DON’T HANG THEMSELVES.” An elderly white woman saw the message and told a Black manager that she was uncomfortable with the message and told him to make me leave. Then she gave him an ultimatum: “Tell him to leave, or I’m leaving.” He looked at me. I looked at him. He gave me the Black man nod. Then he held the door open as she walked out. She left. I stayed. That moment said more than either of us could have said out loud. Sometimes a message makes people uncomfortable because it forces them to confront something they would rather not discuss. The shirt wasn’t threatening anybody. It was making a statement. And apparently, that statement was uncomfortable enough to make someone walk out of a grocery store.
