Delivering the keynote address at RailTel AI Workshop 2026 – “AI@Government: Powering the Future”, Shri S. Krishnan, IAS, Secretary, MeitY, Government of India, outlined the key building blocks required to strengthen India’s AI ecosystem and translate the potential of AI into meaningful outcomes for citizens. He emphasised that compute infrastructure, models and data must work together to enable the development of AI applications suited to India’s needs. Highlighting the importance of access to models and computing power, he stressed the need for India to be an integral part of the global AI value chain while simultaneously developing indigenous capabilities and ensuring data sovereignty. Shri Krishnan underlined the need to build India-specific AI models that reflect the country’s multilingual and multicultural character, rather than relying solely on models trained largely on internet data that may not adequately capture India’s cultural context. He noted that the IndiaAI Mission is supporting the development of such capabilities and that significant progress is being witnessed. He also highlighted the need to accelerate enterprise AI adoption and develop applications that strengthen governance and citizen-centric services. Referring to the importance of skills and domain expertise, he emphasised integrating AI into education while ensuring that users retain the ability to critically evaluate AI-generated outputs. He also flagged cybersecurity as a critical consideration as AI adoption expands. Acknowledging RailTel’s role as a technology organisation and its work across digital transformation initiatives, Shri Krishnan said RailTel can play a significant role in building AI-ready infrastructure and supporting enterprise and Government AI applications. As part of the Vigilance Awareness Campaign–2026 and in pursuance of Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) directives, RailTel’s Vigilance Department organised a workshop on “GeM – New Features and Functionalities” at the Corporate Office on 21st September 2026. The session was conducted by Sh. Tushar Agarwal, Trainer, GeM Central Team, who provided insights into the latest features and functionalities of the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), with a focus on enabling efficient, transparent and compliant procurement. Considering the significant volume of procurement undertaken through GeM, the workshop assumed much importance in keeping officials abreast of the latest processes, functionalities and best practices on the platform. Speaking on the occasion, CMD RailTel highlighted the importance of providing feedback to GeM authorities on various functionalities including Sellers' rating etc. CVO, RailTel, reiterared the need for integrity, while exercising sound judgement for responsible decision making, while making use of digital public procurement portal and how new features can greatly enhance making the procurement decisions more transparent, to further strengthen efficiency and accountability in RailTel procurement.
