I am incredibly impressed with Lyon Part-Dieu station. The French dealt with constraints at the historic main station, Perrache, by creating a whole new one, with a major new district around it. I wonder if Old Oak Common and Curzon Street will feel like this…
It is really hard to imagine how the French built their high speed lines so cheaply across such challenging terrain… All that ancient woodland, all those old churches, stately homes and pretty villages. All those roads to cross. (Not to mention they were doing it 50 years ago…)
Poster at the Gare de Lyon, Paris: “45 years of the TGV: it is crazy how quickly that has passed”. And in the UK we are only about 55 years behind…..
The last segment for the #Wendover green tunnel has been lifted into position 👍🎥.
Set to stretch for around a mile, the tunnel is being built inside a cutting alongside the A413 to the west of the #Buckinghamshire town. In total, 2,740 precast concrete segments were used to build the tunnel. With the central part now finished, the focus is turning to the portals at either end, completing the floor slab and internal fit out.

Workers taking a break on the roof of the #HS2 Wendover green tunnel
The gap is nearly closed on the #HS2 Wendover green tunnel. About 50 metres left to do, I would say 🧵1/3
A lot of progress has also been made in covering the #HS2 Wendover Green tunnel to the north, though much infill still to do in the cutting 🧵2/3
The two halves of the #HS2 green tunnel at Wendover have nearly joined up. It now runs all down the cutting and under the temporary road bridge. About 100 metres left to do (and about the same at the northern end. 1/2
Work on burying the Wendover green tunnel is also proceeding apace. Unlike other #HS2 structures, which will be visible for the ages, this one will soon disappear from view forever. 2/2
