When we started the company it was a big technological bet on the combination of AI, robotics, automation and software coming together to change the way physical science worked. It was about using all of that to create a closed-loop approach to experiments that compounded with every turn.
Less than 18 months after founding we'd gone from 2 people in @josephfkrause apartment to a full team that had just completed the build of System One, our first lab. 12 months later, we're recognized by @TIME.
Science will continue to develop technologically and @RadicalAI will be a massive part of that change. We've gone from bet to recognition. Now more work to do to push this forward on a broader scale.
Today, @TIME featured our self-driving lab on its 2026 Best Inventions list.
Radical's self-driving lab discovers and develops novel materials at the speed of AI, enabling 10x more material discoveries per scientist.
By combining AI, robotics, and experimental data, our high-throughput system can unlock advanced materials for new technologies.
We are transforming how the world does science. #TIMEBestInventions

Many drugs work by binding to a specific target in the body and blocking or changing what it does. An important first step in the drug development process is designing a molecule that can bind tightly to its target. Traditionally, that's meant weeks or months of expert work per target, sifting through a large number of candidates to identify the few that work.
We wanted to test if Claude could successfully design novel protein binders from scratch (also called de novo design). With a protein design prompt written by a human expert, Claude autonomously designed protein binders against 14 out of 15 targets.
We then worked with Adaptyv Bio and Twist Bioscience, who independently built and tested the proteins Claude designed.

gone are the days of trying to prove to people that data-driven materials development is better or faster or that it can actually deliver new products. Now it's a foot race to see who can spin the wheel of discovery fastest and actually get products to market. RadicalAI in lead!
RAI-939 outperformed industry-leading aerospace material C103 by 125x.
In a head-to-head torch test, Purdue Applied Research Institute confirmed that Radical AI’s RAI-939 sample exhibited superior environmental survivability to C103.
C103 has been in use since the Apollo program, but its performance limitations and constrained supply have fueled a decades-long search for a replacement.
Our lab discovered that replacement in just 16 weeks.
Now, we aim to scale up production of the alloy to make bigger components.

New tools, new automations, new capabilities. We are upgrading the entirety of SystemOne in our new facility, building a lab that has never been built before in the materials industry.
This week — sample preparation. We went from the crappy tool on the left, with a throughput of 1 sample per day, to the tool on the right, achieving a throughput of 1 sample every 26 mins.
This was only possible because of close collaboration with the tool provider, including a custom design that enables this speed of operation.

Materials science startup @RadicalAI is playing the long game with a 100 year vision. CEO @josephfkrause believes he will see their materials on Mars by “staying true to the mission, true to the execution plan and driving against that.”

"When we put a civilization on Mars, the habitat that they're living in will be made with Radical materials."
Materials science hasn't evolved much in 150 years, says @RadicalAI CEO Joseph Krause (@josephfkrause).
In a new lab in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, his startup is looking to change that -- with an AI-assisted process that he compares to the jump from hands-free driving to Waymo.
It's an approach that investors and scientists have called too good to be true; a black box.
“How could you really discover more alloys in a week than we have discovered in our company history?” he says they ask.
But since its founding in 2024, Radical AI has already produced valuable (secret) alloys for customers despite raising just $55M in its last funding round.
On The Upstarts Podcast, Krause explains how a SpaceX breakthrough lit a lightbulb of innovation; why a previous gen of 'cloud labs' under-delivered; and why concurrent engineering is as big an unlock as next-gen robots.
Plus, he shares his Upstart Moment: staying the course where other deep tech companies have faltered from outside feedback.
This season of the show is presented by @Rippling.

The amount of materials challenges we face trying to reindustrializate America is endless. We @RadicalAI are working to start solving the most important.
What a time for U.S. manufacturers. Government is calling for innovative solutions to address some of America's most complex manufacturing and materials challenges relevant to the U.S. energy sector.
Below is a list of top areas of interest.
This isn't a surprise. The National Security Strategy, National Defense Strategy, and a slew of Executive Orders have signaled a surge in demand for these capabilities. For reindustrialization. To supercharge the defense industrial base. And now we're seeing the specific calls for innovation.
One example: Department of Energy's HPC4EI initiative released a solicitation a few days ago. It's an opportunity for U.S. manufacturers to participate in collaborative projects with DOE national labs' supercomputing capabilities and technical expertise to strengthen domestic supply chains and enhance U.S. industrial competitiveness.
Some of the solutions they are most interested in:
- Overcoming qualification and certification barriers for advanced materials (time, cost)
- Scaling and manufacturability / reducing cost and risk in scaling up advanced materials
- Computational methods that reduce technical, cost, and supply chain risks for rare earth elements, battery materials, etc
- Multifunctional materials w/ combined structural, thermal, and electrical performance

- Advanced reactors, turbine systems, grid-scale storage
- Simulation of advanced manufacturing methods
Modeling of high-throughput machining, finishing, and forming technologies that deliver greater precision and reliability at scale
- AI/ML and smart manufacturing platforms to optimize process control
- Technologies that improve productivity optimization in energy-intensive industries
- Chemicals and fuels -- process innovations, novel reactor and separation technologies, advanced materials development for chemical manufacturing
- Iron and steelmaking, aluminum, and other metals -- innovative processes for primary metals production, methods to optimize productivity, methods to decopperize steel
- Food and beverage products processing that optimize efficient recovery and reuse of waste energy, extend product shelf life, minimize waste
- Cement and concrete, asphalt, and glass process innovations, alternative source materials, novel material composition, and solutions to reduce waste
- Forest products, including novel dewatering or drying technologies and improved pulping and chemical recovery processes
- Equipment and processes that improve industrial process heating, including reducing cost, improving efficiency, or enhancing product quality
- Non-thermal processes for cost-competitive separations and treatments
- Industrial technologies that can ensure grid reliability amidst industrial demand growth

AI data centers need massive power. But gas turbine supply is completely maxed out — order books full until 2029. The difference maker? Materials.
Single-crystal turbine blades made from nickel superalloys. A materials engineering feat only 3 companies have perfected after 60 years.
This is exactly the kind of hard materials problem @RadicalAI is built to solve. But we don’t just look backward, we are looking forward to what industry is next.
You cannot buy a new gas turbine until 2030. Order books at GE, Siemens, and Mitsubishi stretch to 2029. Turbine prices have nearly tripled since 2019. Every AI data center needs power and every gas plant needs a turbine. And every turbine has one part that bottlenecks the entire industry: The blade. It has to survive in gas 500°C above the melting point of the metal it's made from and spin at up to 20,000 RPM under 10,000 g of centrifugal force. Each blade is grown as a single crystal of nickel superalloy, pulled through a vacuum furnace at 3 mm per minute. A set of blades costs $600,000 and takes 90 weeks to grow. The same metallurgy powers modern jet engines. Only 3 companies on Earth can build one. China spent $42 billion trying to catch up. They bought a Russian fighter engine, took it apart, and copied every part. Their copy ran 30 hours between overhauls versus 400 for the original. Modern Western engines run 4,000. You can reverse engineer the shape of a turbine blade. You cannot reverse engineer 60 years of metallurgy.

New research drop: self-correcting search for materials discovery.
We partnered with @GoodfireAI to give a generative materials model the ability to check its own work during generation.
The problem: only ~6.5% of model outputs are viable candidates in a target property range. The fix: probes trained on the model's own internals that accept or reject each denoising step in real time.
Result: ~30% more viable materials. No retraining of the base model. The model just learned to course-correct.
The technique is general — applicable to any diffusion model. Proteins, molecules, drug design.
This is what the autonomous materials discovery stack looks like in practice.
