When it comes to the Hasbara talking points that get repeated over and over again, there are basically two types of people who regurgitate them. The first group absolutely knows that what they are saying is Hasbara. They know what is an out-and-out lie, which facts they are leaving out, and which phrases they are manipulating to bend the truth. But they also know they have an audience that is desperate to be told they aren’t the bad guys, and they are more than happy to oblige. That audience is the second group, the ones who consume the Hasbara and then pass it along. They are just so relieved to read something – anything – that will quell the nagging feeling that they might be on the very wrong side of things. (Social scientists call this motivated reasoning.) Amit Segal is obviously in the first group – sourced up and completely aware of exactly how all of this works, but willing to debase himself for some of that sweet, sweet speaking engagement cash. I do often wonder if he ever wishes he could be an actual journalist instead.

In 2025, I was covering Flag Day in Jerusalem, the annual state-sponsored pogrom when @Heidiphotos and I found ourselves surrounded by a mob of extremists chanting “All Arabs are whores” and getting more and more aggressive, trying to take my phone and her camera. I have been saying that since this asinine style of content first became popular, where the person acts as if they are bravely confronting someone, but they are actually talking to their phone because vapid narcissism and the insatiable lust for external validation through likes and retweets has replaced any semblance of real activism. Without getting into the details of who he and they are, look how much dumber the content creator looks when the people he is “totally owning” just completely ignore him. I don’t know why more people don’t do this more often. Instead, everyone falls right into the trap of the selfie confrontation and it kills me.

Thank you to every single one of the pro-Palestinian “we won’t let you forget, not even for one day, the Palestinians who are still dying” influencers who spent zero percent of the day helping Palestinians who are still dying and 100 percent of the day accusing Mamdani of genocide. I’m sure the Palestinians who are literally begging people not to murder them are incredibly touched. None of you did anything of value or consequence yesterday. None of you eased anyone’s suffering, made the world a better place, or ensured one less person would die tomorrow. Yesterday I went to a memorial. I won’t try to describe what it was like because I no longer want to be part of the commodification of grief, but I will ask you one question: When was the last time you were in the physical presence of another human being experiencing a genuine emotion… that you weren’t filming or posting about? If the answer is more than 24 hours, GO THE FUCK OUTSIDE. (And leave your phone at home.) I really think we can stop talking about when AI will bring down humanity. We are already there.
