This activity helps children with number recognition, counting, and understanding quantities. Discussing and explaining these types of math concepts helps young children develop critical thinking skills, as well as math vocabulary.

ALT Participants learned about why early literacy is critical and why literacy-rich environments matter. They explored strategies for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. ALT This 4th grade student at PS 67 Discovery selected the book Puffins. The tutor/mentor Lynn Segada, enhanced the building of background knowledge by referring to a world map, showing her student where puffins are found in comparison to where we live. Tutor/mentors often bring their own experience, knowledge and outside resources, like maps, photographs, and artifacts, to help build comprehension for students.
