In season school team > out of school club team > out of season sport.
It's a priority conversation.
Multisport athletes shouldn't be punished by ego tripping adults because they are talented and can't be in two places at once.
(Again what Shawn is asking, when did Club teams get all this power???).
I've seen this with football, baseball, soccer, volleyball, swimming. This kind of conflict is never in the kid's best interest.
I have apparently developed another controversial coaching opinion.
If you join the cross country team, the cross country meets are mandatory.
I know.
Pretty extreme stuff.
And if there is a club soccer game scheduled at the same time, we are still going to expect you to be at the XC meet.
Apparently this requires explanation now.
What surprises me more is the outrage this generates.
"You mean they HAVE to go?"
Yes.
That's how being on a team works.
We practice so we can compete.
The meets aren't optional bonus content you unlock if nothing better shows up on the family calendar.
I didn't realize "athletes are expected to attend competitions" had become one of my hottest coaching takes.
But here we are.

HS Coaches will swear they want multi-sport athletes…
Then schedule “optional” workouts, that “aren’t mandatory” during every other single sport’s season.
Nothing says support like making a 16-year-old choose which adult to disappoint.

It’s too bad that Michael Johnson didn’t have all these weekend certified, corrective exercise gurus to “fix” his
“dysfunctional” running posture.
And man, if Michael Phelps only had access to functional based physical therapists, they could “fix” his forward head posture and

I hate this black and white distinctions
If you think a 1-3 mile easy run is going to lose your speed, you don't understand training
Is it the best way to develop aerobically for some sports? Maybe not. Depends on sport.
But the fear of a few miles will kill speed is nonsense
The conditioning epidemic must stop. Read that last part about baseball players running miles… it’s counterproductive!!

Every elite competitor has to deal with this tension: the love of the craft versus the urge to be the best.
You've got to hold on to the joy.

There isn’t one.
The athletes winning championships are usually the ones who:
Show up every day
Trust the process
Handle adversity
Stay healthy
Stay consistent for years and years and years
Boring wins.

I’m in love with this sentence:
“Your future is shaped by the habits you repeat, not the goals you set.”
TRENDING 😳: University of Florida had a CHEAT CODE when World-Class Sprinter Jeff Demps would suit up at Running Back.
Rumor has it, the only person to ever beat Demps in a race is someone that he shared a backfield with - Chris Rainey…
With Rainey, Demps and Percy Harvin, that might be one of the fastest teams EVER.
