Conflict across Myanmar continues to escalate
In October, internally displaced people topped 4 MIL. One of the world’s biggest displacement crises.
I’m announcing an additional €16 MIL. in 🇪🇺 humanitarian aid for Myanmar & Bangladesh, which is hosting 1 MIL. Rohingya refugees.

The Rohingya survived genocide perpetrated by Myanmar’s military. Now, they face new atrocities, including CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY, at the hands of the United League of Arakan/Arakan Army (ULA/AA).

The past few weeks have been truly devastating for #Rohingya.
Governments are moving towards returns, deals and renewed engagement with the #MyanmarMilitary.
Meanwhile, the news from #RakhineState is truly horrifying.
Our sources tell us Rohingya are trapped between Myanmar military airstrikes and their communities terrorised by the #ArakanArmy.
Young Rohingya are forcibly recruited to become human shields. People are being arrested and extorted. Families are fleeing. Homes, land and villages are taken by the Arakan Army.
On 28 September, 34 Rohingya from one village in #Rathedaung were arrested at once by Arakan Army.
The next day, one man was returned to his family dead. The other 33 are still missing. Their families have been given no answers.
Politics is going backwards while Rohingya face total erasure.
This is an emergency.

Check this statement by Anwar Ibrahim in the Malaysian parliament.
He presents a false choice. As if he has to choose between no engagement and treating Min Aung Hlaing like a normal president.
Using the US and Europe as a rhetorical foil does not make this a principled "independent stance" - it is a smokescreen. Negotiation does not require rehabilitation. Nor does it require rolling out the red carpet for a butcher. And hosting a coup leader is an outright insult to the people of Southeast Asia.
Anwar Ibrahim hides behind domestic "security" and refugee repatriation. Believing that a military clique currently conscripting youth by force and losing control of its own borders is going to “safely resettle” the refugees it terrorised is an absurdity.
Whatever remained of Reformasi died the moment a man who built his career on universal human dignity decided that the vicious scapegoating of refugees and whitewashing a dictator’s reputation was an acceptable price to pay for domestic political survival.

When Malaysians were demanding that something be done about Rohingya refugees, did that “something” include rolling out a red carpet for a mass murderer of their fellow Muslims?
PM Ibrahim will likely live to regret sacrificing his reputation & integrity in this way. Min Aung Hlaing won’t solve his party’s domestic political problems but this visit will stain Pak Anwar as an enabler of this monster.
#WhatsHappeningInMyanmar
#Selangor : Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Malaysia today for a two-day official visit, with the repatriation of Myanmar nationals in Malaysia among key issues to be discussed with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Min and his delegation arrived at BRC KLIA at 12.30 pm on a special flight and were accorded a static guard of honour by the First Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment led by Capt Muhammad Ikhwan Adlan Jamaludin.
