Christian support for Zionism came first. Christian writers were already reading the Land of Israel as a political inheritance owed to the Jewish people. Scroll through social media today and that same reading is everywhere. Christian Zionists repeat it constantly, and in doing so they keep confirming what traditional Judaism always rejected. Zionism did not grow out of Jewish faith. It is a nationalist project that took over the name, the scriptures, and the identity of a whole religion. For the rabbis, that land was holy ground, not a title deed. Treating it as a national birthright was not a Jewish idea. It was the very notion the classic schools of thought condemned. Zionism began where Judaism said one must not go. Israel’s first prime minister made the split plain. David Ben-Gurion denied G-d in public, then still called the Bible the book that mattered most to him, because it served the national claim: “Since I invoke Torah so often, let me state that I don’t personally believe in the God it postulates… I am not religious, nor were the majority of the early builders of Israel believers. Yet their passion for this land stemmed from the Book of Books… [The Bible is] the single most important book in my life.” He set theology aside and kept the Book as a charter.
