my own two cents:
1. friction is conflict. friction is delay, friction is sacrifice, friction is discomfort; having friction in your life means that you hold certain things at varying degrees of importance and, due to the immutable limitations of reality, your desires and needs put you in conflict with them.
2. conflict –– meaningful conflict –– is what makes stories interesting. there is no plot if there is no conflict. there is no journey. there is no hero anymore, denied the very odyssey through which they were to have become. there is no "friends we made along the way" who are, at the core, just people whose paths cross due to life’s little frictions, and isn’t that how we meet most people? someone has something to offer that the other needs –– a need being a lack, and a lack arising from friction.
it makes sense to optimize businesses or workflows –– they don't have to be anything besides what they were intended for: straightforward, predetermined purposes. important distinction: an unoptimized workflow creates unnecessary and meaningless friction for humans, friction that leads to nothing of value.
but a human life doesn’t come with a predetermined purpose (look away, theologians!!). a life is a story that can be painfully drab or endlessly captivating, and if you're someone who seeks excitement, who wants to grow, who enjoys novelty, friction is what creates the texture that makes a smooth, unremarkable flat line of existence multi-dimensional.
the spotify wrapped strategy is theeeeee most ubiquitous marketing play at this point but i eat it up every time...
@Pinterest summer recap i love u!!!
TIL that the Issey Miyake Montessori is right across the street from the Kelly Clarkson pretty woman store.
The entire internet is just whatever is going on in Brooklyn Heights
Art of Play, the store of the Kelly Clarkson saga, shares new statement:
“We'd like to clarify one additional detail about Kelly Clarkson's visit to our Curiosity Shop on Saturday.
During the 5 minutes she spent in the store, she inquired about our mechanical bird puppet named Molly. We explained that while Molly is permanently attached to the wall and serves as a de facto mascot for our shop, a nearly identical automaton is owned by the creator of the machines, a brilliant artist named Bliss Kolb who lives in Seattle. He told us he would be willing to part with Molly's twin for $15,000. We explained all of this to Kelly Clarkson.
We also offered to show her a different singing bird automaton, made by a traditional clockmaking shop in Germany, that she could have taken home with her that day. It costs about $2,000. She did not stick around long enough to see it.
We've reached out to Kelly directly to try and clear the air. We really do wish her the best and hope that someday we can all laugh about this misunderstanding.”
It’s true 🥀 the Bloomberg office is, to this day, the best office I’ve ever stepped foot in
Everyone wants to tell me how great their office pantry is but after the Bloomberg pantry nothing can surprise me. The Bloomberg pantry is the size of a small regional airport. The Bloomberg pantry has a fresh peanut butter machine and matcha on tap. The Bloomberg pantry makes the Thrive Capital pantry look positively soviet. Its memory will drive you to tears whenever you visit another newsroom
