Labor union representing newsroom employees of the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Arm of the Washington-Baltimore News Guild. Let's keep local news strong.

The Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild is shocked and disappointed by @mcclatchy 's decision to lay off 33% of its unionized workers at the Idaho Statesman, The News Tribune (Tacoma), Tri-City Herald, The Olympian and Bellingham Herald. This includes 10 journalists in Idaho, and seven across Washington. These severe cuts will hobble these news organizations and leave the public throughout the Northwest less informed about the events and decisions that affect them, and with fewer people holding the powerful to account. These are journalists  who investigated local hospitals, served as watchdogs over state and local government, showed up at every high school game, jumped in to cover breaking news like wildfires, covered news in overlooked communities, and monitored development in one of the fastest growing regions in the country. One of these papers will no longer have a dedicated reporter covering city hall. Another will no longer have anyone dedicated to covering the state capitol. McClatchy has decided that short-term profits for a hedge fund matter more than the wellbeing of the communities that its newspapers are supposed to serve. That is a model that is destined to fail.

The RNPA is sad to learn of the death of Jay Levit, who for years was a fierce defender of the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s bargaining unit. He continued working for us well into his 80s and had enormous energy. We owe him a great deal of thanks. blileys.com/obituaries/Jay-J…

Last week, Lee Enterprises laid off another member of our bargaining unit, a senior employee with decades of experience. It was the 21st layoff in our newsroom in less than three years and the latest blow to our newsroom's morale.

And it came despite David Hoffman, Lee's majority shareholder, saying he would bring "new hope for local news." In July, newspapers across the company carried glowing stories about Hoffman, coronating him as "the man who's on a mission to save your newspaper."

And yet, we continue to see the same old story: Fewer people to cover the community. Poor digital products. Disregard for the reader experience. We continue waiting for Hoffman to live up to his word.

A profile package on David Hoffmann, majority shareholder of Lee Enterprises, is running in all @LeeEntNews papers this weekend. We support his goals but also support independent, editorial integrity. Please read the @Poynter story and our full statement: poynter.org/reporting-editin…

Today the RNPA sent a letter to management expressing concern for how the newspaper's advertising team pitched an ad to the city of Richmond. "Communicate through structured storytelling instead of interviews." Such language undercuts the newsroom's work.

We call on the company to adopt a more unifying message for its ad sales. We will continue writing hard-hitting journalism that holds public figures accountable.

Today is @LeeEntNews' annual stockholder meeting. Three weeks ago, we sent this letter to all of Lee's top executives regarding the company's short-sighted growth strategy and need to refocus. We received a response from no one, which says a lot about how the company is run.

Sun management has once again disparaged our talented HUMAN reporters and their work, this time by filling more than half a page in today’s paper with AI slop.

Due to more cost cutting by Lee Enterprises, the Guild is saying difficult goodbyes to 4 more members: Dale Anderson, Toni Ruberto, Natalie Brophy and Jamal Harris Jr. (not pictured). We thank them for their contributions to The News and wish them well in their next chapter.
