Outsourcing is a racket. It's time the Labour government kept their promise to deliver the ‘biggest wave of insourcing for a generation’.

Posters don’t patrol platforms. Fines don’t replace frontline staff. Whilst these measures are welcome, the urgent priorities should be: staffed stations and services; an end to lone working; restored BTP capacity; directly employed security and enforcement staff; legal protection covering public-transport workers. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm89…

A company generating billions wants to stop paying its workers the Real Living Wage. Those workers are fighting back. If that doesn't tell you everything that's wrong with outsourcing, what will? Are you listening @LNER ? #InsourceNow 📸 gatesolutions Kings Cross

GateGroup brings in billions. Its workers are fighting for the Real Living Wage. Funny how there's never a shortage of money at the top. Only at the bottom. xitter.cf/RMTunion/status/211104…

📹 "@andyburnham, how can you justify this?" Transport Secretary @Heidi_Labour says she wants a railway that's an employer of choice. Does that include the outsourced workers at @LNER ? Or are they expected to survive on £12.71 an hour? #InsourceNow

RMT members to strike again over threat to water down safety on East West Rail RAIL UNION RMT members working as Train Managers for Chiltern Railways will take a further 24 hours of strike action this Saturday (17 October) as the company continues to refuse to provide guarantees over the safety-critical role of the second person on board proposed East West Rail services. The latest walkout follows strike action last Saturday (10 October) and comes amid growing concerns over plans to introduce driver-only operation on East West Rail, threatening both passenger safety and the existing Train Manager roles at Chiltern Railways. RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said the union remained determined to resist any attempt to undermine safety standards on the railway. “Our members have already demonstrated their determination to defend the safety-critical role of the second person on board, and they will be taking further strike action this Saturday because Chiltern management has failed to address their legitimate concerns. “Driver-only operation represents an unacceptable weakening of safety standards and threatens the vital role Train Managers play in protecting passengers and ensuring the safe operation of services. “Chiltern Railways must stop ignoring the concerns of its frontline workforce and provide firm guarantees that safety-critical Train Manager roles will be protected on East West Rail. “Our members will not stand by while passenger and worker safety is put at risk, and RMT will continue this campaign until those guarantees are secured,” he said.

RMT slams LNER contractor as it scraps payment of Real Living Wage RAIL UNION RMT condemns outsourcing company gatesolutions as workers take strike action. Outsourced catering staff who work along publicly owned LNER’s route will be taking strike action starting tomorrow (October 16) in a dispute with gatesolutions, an arm of a Swiss multinational, over pay.   The workers, who supply food to LNER’s services between London and Edinburgh are walking out after their employer announced that it would no longer pay the Real Living Wage, leaving some of these workers, many of whom work unsocial hours, on rates barely above the minimum wage legally permitted. The workers will walk out at 5am on Friday 16th October unless an offer is made to resolve the dispute.   Their employer, gatesolutions, is an arm of the Swiss-based multinational Gate Group, owned by a Singaporean Sovereign Wealth Fund and a private equity fund based in Hong Kong. The Group has a turnover of £4.7 billion and made an operating profit of £136 million in 2025. Their UK arm’s highest paid Director was paid £265,000 last year.   Outsourcing companies make their profits by holding wages down as low as possible and imposing inferior sick pay and pension arrangements on their staff.   LNER is part of the publicly owned railway and publicly prides itself on ‘leading the way’ in providing social value across its supply chain.   RMT General Secretary Eddie Dempsey said:   “The behaviour of gatesolutions management is contemptible but it’s par for the course for the outsourcing industry and the real scandal is that LNER is allowing this behaviour from its contractor. “Every day that outsourcing continues to exist it undermines the government’s ambitions that GBR be ‘one railway, one team and an employer of choice’.  We need to see action now. “LNER need to get their contractor in order and make them table an offer to sort out the dispute and then they need to start talking to us about insourcing this contract.”

A reminder of my train evacuation on the East Coast Mainline… Didn’t make the headlines - but imaging 100+ left to themselves on a stranded train.
🚨 Train evacuation! 🚨 My Grand Central train London-Bradford hit an animal, damaging air brakes. 🦺 Great to see staff training kicking in & TOC cooperation as passengers are helped off the train, onto track & platform. Top marks everyone. ✅
