Don’t destroy magic for children

Is the baby ok now mummy, my 8y daughter asks.
I’ve just come home from caring for a baby who died from SUDI.
Yes thank you, I say, needing to protect.
I don’t think they are, mummy.
No, you’re right. I’m sorry. Sometimes babies die too.
Truth is better. For kids too.

- creating a safe space
- Time to speak
- The right language

He was able to express his needs safely in his language. I was able to help. It felt rare.

Bad things to say to patients at triage:
• It's not an emergency
• It's just a minor illness
• Why did you come?
Good things to say to patients at triage:
• I can see you're worried
• Fortunately, I haven't found anything serious
Don't dismiss. Reassure.
