Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky (D-PA)—the original MMM before Marianette Miller-Meeks—was swept into office in the “Year of the Woman” wave in 1992. She was the first Democrat to represent Montgomery County since 1915. She cast the deciding vote for President Clinton’s ‘93 budget — and that vote cost her her seat in the Republican Revolution of ‘94. Sixteen years later, when Democrats finally had a trifecta again, conservative organizations painted her as a cautionary tale for why swing-seat Democrats should not give their votes for Obamacare. She responded by writing an op-ed in the Washington Post telling those swing-seat Democrats, in effect, “pass Obamacare. The drastic improvement of our abysmal healthcare system is something that’s worth losing your seats in Congress over.” Her son Marc married Chelsea Clinton in 2013. Today, she is 84, and a political science faculty member at UPenn.
