Setting up for speaking at the Equip Conference in Monterey in the 2nd main session on the drift of going Neo-Fundamentalist or Progressive/Liberal and being very careful to not accuse or assume what someone is or isn’t with beliefs before careful exploration and actual dialogue if possible. We don’t have the luxury in today’s world of demeaning or dismissing others for non-essential differences and the key is to define what is essential or not.

Tim Mackie from the Bible Project will be teaching at Vintage Faith Church this Sunday, February 18th at 9 & 11 AM. Tim will be teaching about how the Bible was written and meant to be understood and the unintentional ways it can be misunderstood and cause confusion.
Tim has spoken at Vintage before and fun to have him back with us again. If you know of anyone in Santa Cruz area who struggles with the Bible you’re invited to join us on Sunday!

My friend Tim Mackie from the Bible Project will be teaching at Vintage Faith Church on Sunday, February 18 at the 9 and 11 AM gatherings.
Tim is speaking about how we may have good intentions when reading the Bible but can develop less than helpful methods If you’re around the Santa Cruz area and know someone who struggles with the Bible let them know as it will be a great Sunday of practical understanding of how to approach the Bible for understanding it as originally written.

Interesting thing about "circles" and "lines." Though one may feel more inclusive than the other, both are in fact bounded. A circle is simply a bent line connected to itself.
This is clearer when it comes to lines. At its worst, the rigidity of the line is accentuated and acts as a wall to keep the "other" out. But at its best, the kindness of clarity creates immediate accessibility, to cross from one side to the other, if and when one so desires. Lines are always wide, but they need not be high.
Circles are more ambiguous and can be, at times, unintentionally deceptive. From one perspective, the circle looks like a really short line, a few steps to the left or to the right and there's an opening. But step that way and discover, the circle (or, line) keeps going. It feels inclusive but the lack of clarity is unhelpful. Where's the opening? How do I know where to step in and where to step out?
I don't think Jesus drew circles. I think Jesus drew lines. And in love, he extended a strong and able hand over those lines to any and all, inviting them to step in.

It is easy to worship by singing songs. It is not easy to worship by offering God everything. —- — Our decisions, our actions, yielding to the truths of Scripture vs. conforming to the world or our own feelings and opinions. (Romans 12:1-2)

The Bible is flooded with singing and music and it’s powerful when the church sings together. However, it is rarely called “worship” as worship happens in so many other ways . We have redefined worship in a more limited way in the contemporary church which means we may be misunderstanding what true worship is.
Tomorrow, we start a new teaching series “Ways of Worship” at Vintage Faith Church which will do an in-depth study of what worship is throughout both Old and Testaments. It’s not just semantics as it impacts our spiritual growth when we miss understanding how we worship day to day (Romans 12:1-2) and most of the time it is not about singing or music.

Dr. Kimberly Grassi teaching the @WesternSeminary Bay Area MA degree cohort Old Testament prophets. Many ministry skills can be learned on the ground in the local church but we urgently need theology and Bible training more than ever today. – at San Jose, CA

The wonderful Xio who is on staff with me for my VP role at @WesternSeminary greeting faculty and staff for the retreat yesterday. We brought up @jaykimthinks to Portland to speak about why church leaders need theological education more then ever - but also how the relationship of church and seminary has changed.
Churches are on the ground in ministry, learning and teaching the needed practical ministry skills - but theological and biblical education at a high level is desperately needed to be taught by experts who focus their lives and studies in those areas in seminary.
Jay helped me launch the @RGenProject ReGeneration with Isaac Serrano and are church leaders who are deeply thinking theologically but not narrow minded and have a humble theological approach which is critically needed for loving effective mission today. It was a fun day and thank you Jay for making the trip to Portland to be there for this retreat. We are launching another MA degree cohort in Bay Area in 2024 and a Doctor of Ministry degree here soon too. – at California, USA

Hooray and happy, great joy that Xio is now full-time serving with me for my role as a VP at @westernseminary to develop theology and training in Bay Area with MA cohorts, events, @RGenProject and soon a Doctor or Ministry degree here.
I personally believe that theology and Bible training is needed more than ever and for church leaders and is even a matter of survival in ways as we must be thinking theologically, thoughtfully and lovingly. Xio was an intern and then on staff at Vintage Faith Church and had the honor of baptizing her. Look forward to her insight and creativity moving forward with the mission. – at Santa Cruz, CA
