Today, we excitedly announce Garden's Almanac of Matter Models! The goal is simple: make it as easy to use the latest matter models as it is to use the latest LLM. We see this as the foundation of a new kind of scientific instrument - one where ensembles of MLIPs, not a single model, are pointed at a discovery problem. garden-ai.github.io/almanac/

The Machine-Learned Interatomic Potential (MLIP) landscape is growing so rapidly. New foundation models for molecules, materials, and proteins seem to drop every week, each with its own architecture, training data, and software quirks. This fragmented, and sometimes downright tricky setup and maintenance slows, and often precludes deep questions that require many models from all but the most advanced users. What if instead anyone could access and run them with very little hassle? Fun surprise coming later in the week... :) @RGBLabMIT @ianfoster

"Atomistic Language Models Understand and Generate Materials" Most materials AI still treats crystals and language separately, either turning atoms into lossy text formats or making LLMs call atomistic tools. This paper makes materials natively multimodal by connecting a 3D atom encoder, Qwen LLM, and diffusion crystal generator through continuous latent projectors. This model can read atomic coordinates, predict properties, edit crystals from text, and generate stable new materials, with SoTA crystal structure prediction and strong de novo generation.

This paper shows that wildly different AI models for molecules, materials, and proteins are independently learning the same underlying representation of matter suggesting we’re converging on a shared physics-grounded “latent reality” that proves scientific foundation models might actually be generalizable across domains

📢New preprint out! We constrain the molecular generation space to follow the "symmetry" of patented molecules that are likely to be synthesizable. Achieved with "symmetry-aware" fragment decomposition, and a constrained Monte Carlo Tree Search generator. arxiv.org/abs/2410.08833

📢 New preprint alert! Our latest work @RGBLabMIT, “Learning Ordering in Crystalline Materials with Symmetry-Aware Graph Neural Networks,” is out on arXiv: arxiv.org/abs/2409.13851 ⚛️ Chemical ordering in crystalline materials, ranging from well-ordered elemental arrangements to fully disordered solid solutions, can strongly influence their key properties, such as stability, strength, and catalytic performance. The neglect of chemical ordering in AI-driven materials discovery has drawn concern from the experimental community, as the AI-predicted ordered structures might turn out to be disordered in reality. 🤖 Following our previous work (doi.org/10.1016/j.xcrp.2024.…), we systematically benchmarked and contrasted a family of powerful representation learning tools for crystalline materials—graph convolutional neural networks (GCNNs)—regarding their capability for capturing and differentiating various symmetrically inequivalent atomic orderings, and more importantly, learning how materials properties depend on diverse orderings. ✅ We found that symmetry-invariant GCNNs fail catastrophically when learning the ordering dependence of materials properties. In contrast, equivariant GCNNs perform much better due to their inherent ability to preserve and distinguish between the distinct crystallographic symmetries of inequivalent orderings, as shown by their well-structured latent space with well-separated representations learned from different orderings. 🧑‍💻 For method-makers, we clarified and formalized an overlooked standing challenge in the representation learning of crystalline materials, provided a large custom-made dataset with task-specific labels and data splits, and further benchmarked a wide variety of models to lay out what SOTA performance looks like. 👨‍🔬 For method-users, we clearly demonstrated why model architecture matters and offered new guidance on model selection to facilitate more rigorous, ordering-aware AI-powered materials discovery, where the dependence of materials properties on chemical ordering can be well captured and accurately considered. #chemtwitter #sciencetwitter #research #chemistry #materials #machinelearning #artificalintelligence
