this got me thinking. a mutual of mine has a pinned tweet: “i just won $10k”. a few days later, he made another post showing a screenshot of a 2 million naira p2p withdrawal, calling it “touch grass”. two nights after he posted a win from a trade he placed on fomo and barely 6 hours after that, his wallets got drained. all of them. he posted evidence, showing the exact sol amounts, every destination address, the whole thing. there was nothing left to protect, so there was nothing left to hide. none of that needed a hacker to go public. the wins, he told you himself. the cashout, he told you himself. the third thing? nobody had to tell you. anyone holding his wallet address could already see the balance, every transfer in, every transfer out, and when, since the day he made the wallet. no post required. the hack didn't create that exposure, it just found a use for the already created exposure. his wallets were not unique to him, and that's just what a solana wallet actually is. not like a bank account, but like a public ledger with your name attached, if anyone bothers to check. your balance, every deposit or withdrawal, and when it happened, all of it sitting there permanently, are tied to an address anyone can search for free. many people use crypto because the idea of self custody, it was supposed to be the upgrade to finance with no bank holding your money and deciding what you do with it. even a bank teller doesn't see your balance unless you walk in and ask. but a solana wallet that claims to have self custody, doesn't wait to be asked, it shows anyone with an internet connection. crypto calls itself financial freedom but it still hasn’t hasn't figured out how to keep your balance private. why not?
