What a turn of events!
Our ReWET project partner in Bangladesh, @mohamma64508589 has taken on the role of Mayor of Dhaka North!

ReWET is one of the projects within @REDAAprogramme , managed by @IIED and funded by UKFCDO…
More interestingly, one of the first visitors were members of Nogor Abad, the agroecological collective working in our project. It may seem very normal now but previously, it would have been impossible for someone from the slum to be close to the mayor, let alone go as an organisation to congratulate…

To restore #Dhaka's wetlands, we must recognize the vital role of urban farmers as environmental stewards. Social inclusion & empowerment must be central to restoration efforts.

I wrote an op-ed for the New Age today, one of the leading english national daily in Bangladesh.
In it, I stressed the importance of restoring wetlands from an urban design perspective and why such nature-based interventions are crucial for climate resilience, but only if they can be done in a socially just way co-produced with the locals…
(Which is what we are hoping to do in our ReWET project)…

Pinus patula, native of Mexico, planted in 80's to restore Nepal's degraded hills. The species, reported to be invasive in Africa, has escaped Nepal's plantation. However, we don't have knowledge on its status & impacts. FAN's @REDAAprogramme is studying its status & impact.

As #COP16Colombia kicks off, the need to make #PeaceWithNature is clearer than ever.
Initiatives like #ReWet are essential for restoring ecosystems, wetland by locals and promoting sustainable practices.

As #COP16Colombia kicks off, a new report commissioned by Wetlands International shows that #wetlands feature in the vast majority of the new National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (#NBSAPs) submitted by countries.
Encouragingly, 83% of submitted NBSAPs explicitly mention the terms “wetlands”, “inland waters” or “freshwater” in their targets.
However, few parties have comprehensively and specifically integrated wetlands throughout the targets and indicators, instead frequently using generic statements to cover all ecosystems without specific wetland targets.
To help countries harness the power of wetlands to deliver the GBF, Wetlands International encourages all countries to use guidance on incorporating wetlands into NBSAPs: wetlands.org/publication/sca…
