Ahead of #CBDCOP17, launched yesterday by UN Biodiversity, the global report on collective progress in the implementation of the #KMGBF, State of Biodiversity Action (#SOBA), provides the first comprehensive global stocktake of progress towards the Framework’s 2030 targets and 2050 vision.
While progress is underway across all 23 targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, implementation must accelerate to achieve the 2030 goals.
Key challenges include inadequate financing, gaps in data and monitoring, limited capacity, weak cross-sector coordination, and insufficient inclusion of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, women and youth.
As Parties convene at COP17, the priority is clear: turn commitments into measurable action through stronger implementation, reliable evidence, inclusive governance and regional collaboration.

This week, RCMRD is in Naivasha, Kenya, participating in a five-day multi-stakeholder workshop to review and validate the updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) 2026–2030.
Led by @EnviClimateC_Ke in collaboration with @UNEP & RCMRD, the workshop brings together government institutions, county governments, technical experts & other stakeholders to review & refine the strategy, validate national biodiversity targets and indicators, & strengthen implementation arrangements.
A key focus is ensuring that Kenya’s NBSAP is aligned with the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (#KMGBF) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (#CBD), while reflecting national priorities and strengthening institutional ownership, coordination and accountability.

We participated in the Second Regional OECM Workshop, held from 29 September - 1 October 2026 in Pretoria, South Africa.
We joined partners and countries from across Eastern and Southern Africa to strengthen knowledge exchange, technical capacity, and collaboration around Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures.
The three-day workshop focused on sharing national experiences, harmonising OECM approaches, strengthening spatial and stakeholder mapping methodologies, advancing marine, coastal and freshwater OECMs, and exploring sustainable finance pathways.
RCMRD is proud to contribute to regional efforts supporting the implementation of Global Biodiversity Framework Target 3 and to strengthen collaboration for nature-positive and resilient landscapes across Africa.
