i² = j² = k² = ijk = −1
On 16 October 1843, walking along the Royal Canal in Dublin, William Rowan Hamilton realised that rotations in three dimensions need four numbers, not three. He carved the rule into Broom Bridge.
The price was commutativity: ij = k but ji = −k. Multiply around the cycle i → j → k and the sign is positive; go against it and it flips.
Today every 3D game engine and spacecraft attitude system rotates objects with q v q⁻¹.

Great win for the minor hurlers v St Brigids earlier. Super performance from all the lads in front of a great crowd. Great to see the support of the senior hurlers on the sideline.

Today in 1843, William Rowan Hamilton was walking along Dublin's Royal Canal when, in "a flash of genius," the rule for multiplying quaternions came to him. He stopped on Broom Bridge and carved it straight into the stone: i^2 = j^2 = k^2 = ijk = -1, the first non-commutative algebra ever discovered.
Mathematicians still retrace his walk every October 16.
