I’m very proud of this new preprint.
We start from a simple observation: most research on human and artificial intelligence treats intelligence as problem solving.
The problem can be extremely difficult. But it’s already defined.
In the real world, we often have to figure out what the problem is in the first place.
Something happens. We have to make sense of it and construct a representation of the problem.
Then new information arrives. Circumstances change. And the way we understood the problem may no longer work.
We argue that the capacity to revise problem representation, which we call adaptive reframing, is a critical and understudied dimension of intelligence.
To study it, we formed a multidisciplinary group spanning neuroscience, cognitive science, robotics, behavioral economics, and complex systems.
Together, we developed three tasks designed to measure three complementary aspects of adaptive reframing.
The tasks are intended to be adaptable to experiments with humans, LLMs, and robots.
We hope this work will inspire new research on human and artificial intelligence.

A returning friend 👋
Professor Yukie Nagai came to visit our lab this monday!
She presented us the ongoing work at her lab (@IRCN_UTokyo), and she experienced our projects firsthand through our many demos 🤖🎲
What a great moment to strengthen our collaboration 🤝

Sharing the vision 💭
Last week, @omareldardear payed a visit to the AICOR Institute for Artificial Intelligence of the University of Bremen, a group with whom we have been collaborating for a while now 🤝
@IITalk
It was a fertile opportunity for discussion in which shared our complementary visions on the development of cognition in humanoid robots, as @omareldardear presented his previous cognitive architecture for audio-visual perception.
It was also great to meet the "new" member of the lab: one of the oldest #iCub robots out there! Age has took some dexterity out of it, but it's still moving 🦾
Thanks everyone for the opportunity, can't wait to se what we'll make together next!
