Op-Ed: We're paying $1 billion this year just to have the National Guard supplement prison guards neglecting their duties. If the staffing ratio is a problem, the solution is safe pathways to release for incarcerated people.

NY prisons are facing a crisis of racist brutality, torture, and death. A person is dying nearly once every two days.
@GovKathyHochul must finally implement the #HALTsolitary Law, expand pathways for release from incarceration, and end all prison abuse.

Welcome news. NY’s prison system is in real crisis, but building a new facility is not the answer. The way to improve conditions is to keep safely shrinking the system—reducing the population by releasing aging people and those who have demonstrated meaningful rehabilitation.
HAPPENING NOW: Recipients of clemency, families seeking clemency for their loved ones, lawmakers and a former DOCCS sergeant who witnessed people’s transformations are rallying outside NY Gov. Hochul’s office to demand she use her Constitutional powers to correct injustices.
“There are 1,040 commutation applications on Hochul’s desk. In the last 2 years, she granted only 3. The people behind those pending applications have served 20, 30, 40 years. The problem is not they haven’t changed. The problem lies with the Governor.” - attorney Steve Zeidman
“When you take mom or dad for decades, you set us back centuries,” says Assembly Member @TheRealLatriceW. “Justice is not only about punishment. It’s also about recognizing change. Gov. Hochul, give clemency applicants fair and timely consideration. Give people second chances.”

BREAKING: Gov. Hochul granted lifesaving pardons to 6 people in the community, but ZERO commutations to people in prison.
Our statement: "While Trump uses clemency as a cash cow, Hochul must show this critical tool can be used properly to correct injustices & reunite families."
