2. Cross-county youth communication networks will be established and strengthened to support timely information-sharing
3. Communities, local administrators and security agencies will strengthen early warning and early response mechanisms.
4. Stakeholders will advocate for the establishment of a police station in the Kipsing/Mlango area to improve security in identified hotspots.
5. County governments and partners will expand vocational training, entrepreneurship and alternative livelihood opportunities for young people.
6. Communities will promote peaceful sharing and management of pasture, water and other natural resources.
7. Stakeholders will support the implementation of the Sabarwawa Protocol and county peace action plans.
8. Progress on the agreed commitments will be regularly monitored and reviewed.

On 3rd July, 2026 Strategies for Northern Development (SND), in partnership with Mercy Corps Kenya through the RANGE, Movement & Mobility, and Promoting Resilience, Inclusivity and Meaningful Engagement (PRIME) Programmes, together with PACIDA, Kenya, convened representatives of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) from Laisamis and Sagante/Jaldesa Wards for a capacity strengthening forum aimed at building stronger, more resilient, and better coordinated community savings institutions.
The forum equipped VSLA representatives with practical knowledge and skills in governance, leadership, accountability, transparency, compliance, financial oversight, and sustainability planning. Participants also explored the importance of collective coordination, effective representation, and institutional collaboration in strengthening community-led financial systems and expanding opportunities for inclusive economic growth.
A key highlight of the forum was the establishment of the Laisamis and Sagante/Jaldesa Ward VSLA Apex Committee, a unified platform that will strengthen coordination, representation, peer learning, and engagement between community savings groups, government institutions, development partners, and the private sector. The newly elected committee also received capacity building on leadership roles, governance structures, financial oversight, and long-term sustainability planning to support effective stewardship of the apex structure.
The training brought together key stakeholders, including the Department of Trade and the Department of Social Services, whose technical sessions enriched participants' understanding of enterprise development, institutional governance, compliance, and pathways for strengthening community-led economic initiatives.
Strong Village Savings and Loan Associations are more than community savings groups, they are engines of financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, women's economic empowerment, and household resilience. By strengthening local institutions and fostering collective action, the initiative is helping communities build sustainable livelihoods, improve social cohesion, and enhance their ability to withstand climate and economic shocks.
This initiative highlights the power of community leadership and collaboration in advancing locally led development. Strong, well-governed community institutions are essential for building resilient economies and creating lasting opportunities for pastoralist communities.

Representatives from 12 Ward Development Committees (#WDCs) across Isiolo, Marsabit and Samburu counties came together to reflect on a journey of local leadership, community-driven development and collective action. Having spent the past year advancing priorities identified and approved by their communities, the WDCs gathered to share experiences, celebrate achievements, reflect on lessons learned and chart the way forward.
The WDCs represented Baawa, Lodokojek, Wamba West, Waso, Golbo, Maikona, Sagante/Jaldesa, Laisamis, Charri, Kinna, Ngaremara and Burat Wards. Throughout the workshop, participants took stock of the progress made in implementing ward priorities, highlighting successes, challenges and the practical lessons emerging from efforts to respond to local development needs. Their stories underscored the critical role that community-led structures play in ensuring that development processes remain responsive, inclusive and accountable to the people they serve.
Convened by @FCDCKenya through the @RANGEprogramme , the two-day Reflection, Learning and Re-planning Workshop provided a platform for meaningful dialogue, peer learning and strategic planning. Participants reflected on how local leadership structures can work more effectively together to address some of the most pressing challenges facing communities across the region.
A key area of discussion focused on strengthening collaboration between WDCs and other community institutions, particularly Community Land Management Committees (CLMCs). Recognizing the interconnected nature of natural resource management, land governance and conflict, participants explored ways of improving coordination and joint action around grazing management, access to water resources, land use planning, conflict prevention and the promotion of peaceful coexistence. These discussions were especially important in the context of increasing pressure on shared resources driven by climate variability, population growth and changing livelihoods.
The workshop also offered an opportunity for participants to review existing advocacy plans and sharpen key messages for engagement in county planning and budgeting processes. Discussions emphasized the importance of ensuring that community priorities are effectively represented in decision-making spaces and that development investments respond to the realities and aspirations of local communities.
Special attention was given to understanding the needs of marginalized and vulnerable groups and exploring practical ways of strengthening linkages and participation mechanisms to ensure that no one is left behind. Participants reflected on how inclusive development approaches can create opportunities for all community members to contribute to and benefit from development initiatives.
In addition, the workshop examined how disaster risk management, climate change adaptation and vulnerability reduction can be more effectively integrated into ward development initiatives. Participants shared experiences and insights on building resilience and strengthening communities' capacity to anticipate, withstand and recover from climate-related and other shocks.
The workshop concluded with a comprehensive re-planning exercise for the next financial year. Each ward reviewed its priorities, identified emerging needs and developed actionable plans aligned with county planning and budgeting cycles. Through this process, the WDCs reaffirmed their commitment to promoting inclusive participation, strengthening accountability, mobilizing local solutions and ensuring that community voices continue to shape development decisions and drive sustainable development outcomes across @isioloCounty011 , @MarsabitGov and @SamburuCountyKE counties.

Community-led action continues to drive climate resilience and sustainable land management across Marsabit County through interventions supported by the RANGE Programme.
The Dololo Dokatu Self Help Group, established in 2018 and based in Dokatu Village in Sagante / Jaldesa ward, Marsabit County, is among the community groups taking practical steps to restore degraded landscapes while strengthening livelihood opportunities for local households.
Through support provided under the RANGE Programme, the group received productive assets and technical support that enabled members to undertake a week-long land preparation and clearance exercise across their 15-acre communal farm. The initiative has laid the foundation for grass reseeding and fodder production efforts aimed at improving pasture availability and promoting sustainable rangeland management.
By investing in collective action and community-led restoration, the group is contributing to healthier ecosystems, improved livestock productivity, and enhanced resilience to the impacts of climate variability. The initiative also strengthens local ownership of natural resource management, ensuring that communities play a leading role in safeguarding and restoring the resources upon which their livelihoods depend.
The activity reflects the broader vision of the @RANGEprogramme to strengthen climate resilience through locally led solutions that integrate environmental stewardship, sustainable livelihoods, and community empowerment.

Last week, the Frontier Counties Development Council (FCDC), through the @RANGEprogramme , continued advancing community-led peacebuilding, resilience, and sustainable livelihoods across pastoral communities in Samburu County.
@FCDCKenya facilitated a dialogue and partnership engagement with Namaiyana Self Help Group (SHG), bringing together reformist morans, community leaders, county government representatives, and local peace structures to strengthen locally driven development, peaceful coexistence, and community resilience.
The engagement culminated in the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between FCDC and Namaiyana SHG — a significant milestone towards advancing alternative livelihoods, social transformation, and sustainable peacebuilding among pastoral communities.
Through inclusive dialogue sessions, participants reflected on the group’s vision, business growth opportunities, and the critical role of community-led initiatives in addressing the underlying drivers of stock theft, livestock-related conflicts, and economic vulnerability within ASAL regions.
The discussions further emphasized the need to scale up similar transformation pathways among moran groups across Samburu as a sustainable approach to breaking cycles of raids and insecurity through economic empowerment, livelihood diversification, mentorship, and stronger collaboration between communities and governance structures.
This partnership reflects the broader vision of the RANGE Programme in supporting resilient rangeland ecosystems, sustainable livelihoods, social cohesion, and long-term stability and development across Kenya’s pastoral communities.
