There’s a quote that hangs above my toolbox:
“What you know doesn’t mean shit. What you do regularly does.”
It’s not just good wisdom. It’s bigger than that.
Knowledge is getting cheaper by the day. Ask any question about engines, medicine, code, money, or theory and you’ll get a better answer in seconds than most experts could give in an hour. Knowing the service procedure used to be half the job. Now it’s the easy part.
What doesn’t collapse is skill.
Skill is the ability to do something well, repeatedly, under real conditions, real pressure. The feel of a wrench when the fastener is right, the eyes that catch the small leak, the judgment that tells you when the book procedure is wrong, he calm when a customer is upset or a kid is melting down.
Those things still require deliberate practice. Time under tension. They cannot be downloaded.
AI can give you the procedure. It cannot give you the hundredth car.
The old status game of “I know more facts than you” is dying. The new one is simpler and harder:
What can you reliably do that most people cannot?
The quote was never really about tools. It was about the difference between information and capability.
Knowing it and not doing it is the same as not knowing it at all.
Do the work. Sometimes hard work pays off and some times hard work is just hard work. More than ever outworking the competition matters.

Certainly in the beginning you might think that money is the answer. After that, you might think that more time is the answer. After that, you might think, I simply need to care more for the physical vehicle, or I want to learn more. Then it's really just about acquiring skills, maybe they're productive skills, or maybe they're just for fun.
And then, at some point, you have to sit in a room and be able to live with yourself. At the end of the day, you would want to be able to sit with yourself and not suffer.
If you've checked some of those boxes I just described and you're still suffering, that says to me that something has been missed. Certainly I found myself, after checking a lot of those boxes, still suffering.
It doesn't mean you have to go through that process in that order. In fact, it's much more helpful to dedicate part of your practice and your energies to viewing the psycho-emotional health as a foundation for everything else. And paying more attention to that from the very beginning.
P.S. Compartmentalizing pain and rationalizing it sometimes works. But as I’ve said to a lot of my friends who will sometimes say, “I don’t want to deal with that. I don’t want to open up that Pandora’s Box,” I try to emphasize that, at least from my experience, no matter what, you *are* dealing with it. But you get to choose if you want to deal with it head-on in a proactive way. Or if you want to have these odd side effects leak out the edges, unbeknownst to you, subconsciously sabotaging you day to day.

At the end of your life youll never wish to be a weaker person, with soft character, and fewer crazy comeback stories.
So you cannot wish for easy times, for things to come fast, and to never get knocked down.
You cannot become an extraordinary person & expect an ordinary life.
