- Created Pepe the Frog in 2005
- years after entered Web3 and NFTs
- A Pepe NFT linked to him sold for 150 ETH
- Worth $537K at the time
- 46 more copies were later distributed for free
- Buyer claimed his $537K NFT collapsed below $30K
- Sued Matt Furie, Chain/Saw and PegzDAO
(Case was later dismissed with prejudice)
Meanwhile PEPE became one of the biggest memecoins in crypto
- Reached billion-dollar valuations
- Matt Furie had nothing to do with the official PEPE memecoin
But scammers kept using his characters and name to launch tokens
- In June 2025 his Replicandy NFT project was exploited
- Hacker minted 6,000 NFTs for $2 each
- Floor crashed 97% in one hour
ZachXBT said projects connected to Furie, Chain/Saw and Favrr lost $1M
(Attack was allegedly linked to North Korean IT workers)
Community accused the teams of negligence and poor communication
Then Matt Furie’s X account was reportedly hacked
- Hacker promoted a Pepe token on BNB Chain
And this year 2026 we have seen more than 5 different hacks inside of a pattern that’s starting to look weird

It seems @Matt_Furie has suddenly and mysteriously regained access to his account. I would like to offer my recounting of the events so far for the record:

Where do I begin.. put simply he abandoned us from the beginning. I called this sequence of events in advance. I realized they didn't give a shit about us and weren't going to bring the collections back. I offered to fix everything for free but did not get permission.
And then he got hacked a bunch of times but didn't care enough to warn anyone on any of his channels. Based on their actions and lack of empathy I believe Matt and Chain/Saw are both sociopaths and also possibly abusing hard substances. ((Tweet 1 of 4))

I don't know what's more pathetic: the people lying by saying Matt Furie drew the collection because they think it'll somehow add value to their bags, or the fact that Matt has zero credibility left after rugging every single one of his early NFT collectors across his previous collections.
The lack of historical knowledge in crypto and the NFT community is insane. One day I'll write a book. I have so much to say.

As the broader #NFT community, we should decide that enough is enough. Rug pulls, deception, broken promises, and abandonment cannot become acceptable or normalized. We should all be able to agree that this kind of conduct has no place in Web3.
More than a year has passed since Matt Furie abandoned these projects without resolution. Over 8,000 holders across Hedz, Zogz, Peplicator, Pepe Editions, and Replicandy were left with significant losses.
Today, I'm appealing to @opensea: since these projects have been neglected by their creator, please give the community a path to revive them. Thousands of collectors invested their time, money, and trust in these projects. They deserve the opportunity to preserve what remains and build something meaningful.
The common good has long been recognized as a central justification for copyright. When a creator abandons a work and its community, preserving and restoring it for the benefit of thousands should matter.
Copyright should encourage creation—not protect abandonment. @HollanderAdam @cartyisme
